Goals last night underline Whittingham's importance to Cardiff City

By Phil Smith

Thursday 18th August 2016

Some fans have been a little underwhelmed by the new system so far but what can't be denied is that it is giving Whittingham the platform to perform at his best. Russell Slade's system did not give enough protection for him to play in the middle but here he can focus on his best assets.

Owen Coyle said after the game that Whittingham's delivery is 'one of the best in the game' and even after all these seasons it's clear that teams still fear what the 31-year-old can do.

This formation should bring the best out of Whitts.

Good OP.
Wasn't there last night but I did see his sublime pass through to Declan for the first goal.
Cue - all the Whitts haters .....

Totally agree with these posts. I've felt over the last couple of years,he needs to play in a 5 man midfield. He seems to be more committed in the tackle aswell, but as soon as he gave the ball away on the rare occasion last night, there were fans criticising him.Sometimes he can't win.

whenever a team loses, its always the creative player that doesnt run about and doesnt tackle hard that gets the stick first. lets not pretend he is the player he was 3-4 years ago, but he is still a fine player. remember, players that cannot dribble past players or create chances themselves are reliant on others to make runs, and therefore look bad in a poor team.

i'm not sure what wages he is on, but they have to be at a realistic level for him to stay beyond this season, IMO.

The OP is bang on!

Whitts is class and vital to our team play, as anyone with non-selective football knowledge will tell you ;)

My MotM last night! :ayatollah: :notworthy:

Great post

It was a superb pass and really show's what Whitts can do at his best. That said hat's off to Declan John who provided the movement for PW make such a good pass.

Whitts has always been class but you can't pick a pass if no-one is moving to give him options. More of our players need to look at Declan's movement last night and learn how it's done.

I must of seen a different game last night, whits was shit where a few years ago he would of hit the flanks in one pass and quicken up the play he now passes short and you can see his confidence is shot

Doesn't matter what happens, you always come out with - Whitts is shit.
Fair enough that's your opinion but he's always first on any managers team sheet, constantly praised by the opposition managers and professional pundits alike and people who know their football can see it.

I actually think with this new style of play we're adopting that the players are under instructions to keep the ball by passing it slower and sideways etc. and looking for the quick break and counter attack similar to how Wales play. The problem is the latter part isn't working because we have no pace on the front foot.

I totally agree - you must have seen a different game last night. What game were you watching? Do you really expect every pass to be a killer pass?

I too believe that Whitts still has a lot to offer. My only reservation is that he does appear to fade as the season goes on.

I felt he looked a lot sharper and the intensity of some his runs tracking back was like he's actually fitter this season than last!

I seen a cardiff midfield where all of them struggled especially 2nd half against the worst side in the championship let's not gloss it up at the moment we are far to slow at moving the ball, we are worse than last season, in the last two games I've seen we Need to improve big time

Vital cog in a 3 man midfield. He's also better in the tackle lately
