' Worse than last season? '

Thu Aug 18, 2016 8:12 am

There has been a few comments about being worse than last season but looking at it - our start to the season is actually on a par with last seasons results.

Birmingham (a) : 2015/16 - 0-1 loss but deserved more
2016/17 - 0-0 draw but deserved more

QPR (h): 2015/16 - 0-0 draw, dire game
2016/17 - 0-2 defeat, dire game

Blackburn (h): 2015/16 - 1-0 win, not a great game
2016/17 - 2-1 win, improved performance

So 4 points from 3 games both seasons. Last season we drew our first three games (played QPR and Blackburn as well) so we have one more point in 2016/17.

Last night wasn't near as bad as some comments I've seen. We are learning a new way of playing and this will take time but improvements were clear from QPR. We created more chances (Pilks and Fred both through on goal, John hit post leading to first OG, also chance when Conolly volled just wide with Immers (?) just missing contact as well at far post). and 2-1 was flattering to Blackburn I thought, we could easily have been 3-4 nil up before they scored.

I think expectations are a little high, we are probably a mid table side right now but hopefully with a good striker arriving we can be play-off contenders again.

Love seeing Declan John play, still plays a little too cautiously for my liking...I want to see him attack the full backs and fill them with fear every time he gets the ball but you can already see him improving with game time and he was better tonight than against QPR, Enjoyed Kadeem Harris' cameo as well, hope he gets more action particularly I think our wing backs needs to be more attacking to make 5-3-2 work. I like 5-3-2 but I hope we have other options as I don't think it is suitable for every game and it only works so well for Wales because we have such quality in attack. City don't have that at the moment. I would stick with 5-3-2 against the bigger sides when we are not expected to win but try a less cautious formation when we are expected to win.

Really enjoyed last night, much more than the QPR game and will take a point at Fulham on Saturday. Hopefully three points then at home to Reading and we can call it a decent start to the season (and a new striker please, Patrick Bamford would be ideal!).

Birmingham (a) : 2015/16 - 0-1 loss but deserved more
2016/17 - 0-0 draw but deserved more

QPR (h): 2015/16 - 0-0 draw, dire game
2016/17 - 0-2 defeat, dire game

Blackburn (h): 2015/16 - 1-0 win, not a great game
2016/17 - 2-1 win, improved performance

Fulham (a) 2015/16 - 1-2 defeat, devastated our play-off hopes.
2016/17 - 2-2 draw, could have gone either way

Reading (h) 2015/16 - 2-0, good win
Reading (h) 2016/17 - 0-1, should have got more out of game

Norwich (a) didn't play, equivalent side might be play-off winners Hull who we lost to 2-0 away in 2015/16
Norwich (a) 2016/17 - 2-3, probably played better than last season but same result

Preston (a) 2015/16 - 0-0, bore draw
Preston (a) 2016/17 - 0-3, hopefully the nadir of our season

After 7 games, 2015/16 - 8 points, 2016/17 - 5 points.

Obviously the quality of sides change but we are only three points off last season in the equivalent games. Before David Msarshall was sold ahead of the Reading game we were a point up on last season. I think the sale has clearly knocked the team but we have enough quality to recover. Understand the worries though as we haven't looked great and have lost the solidity of last season and not improved in any other way. Trollope deserves to be under pressure as it currently isn't good enough but he deserves more time to turn it around. Hopefully Preston was the low point and we start going up from here on in. I fancy three points tomorrow.

Next 6 games:

Leeds (h) 2015-16, 0-2 loss - should have won this game, sucker punched
Rotherham (a) 2015-16, 1-2 loss, arguably Marshall sending off cost us anything
Derby (h) 2015-16, 2-1 win - great win in fairly even game
Burton (a) 2015-16, didn't play equivalent team would be 23rd placed MK Dons where we lost 2-1
Bristol City (h) 2015-16, 0-0 draw, deserved to lose this game
Sheff Wed (h) 2015-16, 2-2 draw, threw away comfortable winning position.

Points from these games in 2015-16 - only 5 points. Surely we will improve on this and come closer to the last seasons equivalent points tally in a season where we almost made 70 points and the were in contention for the play-offs.

How do you think we will do?

Leeds (h) 2016/17 - 0-2 didn't deserve to lose but probably not to win either

Rotherham (a) 2015/16 - 1-2 defeat, Marshall sent off
Rotherham (a) 2016/17 - 2-1 win, thank you Lambert

Derby (h) 2015/16 - 2-1 win, great game
Derby (h) 2016/17 - 0-2, dreadful performance

2015-16 - 11 points
2016-17 - 8 points

We must have got a lot of points from the bigger sides last season.

Chill, if you read the updating analysis with each post you will see that we are currently 3 points worse than last season. Equivalent fixtures last year only saw us get 11 points and we finished 8th despite that.

Though I think are performances are much worse and our team also much worse atm.
