The QPR boss has called on his former fans to give their backing to Paul Trollope as he goes in search of his first win against Blackburn Rovers. The 2-0 defeat on Sunday was met with severe disappointment by the fans in the stadium but Hasselbaink believes the players will thrive if the boss is well supported.
He said: “That's how fans are nowadays, it's the understanding what the new coach is trying to do, he wants to impose his philosophy on the club and if you support the club you need to give him the support. You need to give him the help.
“That will help the players, I'm a big believer in that. It's not only for the people here it's for the people all over. If you're behind your team in good and bad times it will only help your players. But I can't think for others.”
The former Bluebird has also identified a resurgent Steven Caulker as key to the progress of his QPR team. Caulker made a big impression during his season in the Welsh Capital but saw his career decline subsequently. The nadir came as he was signed on loan by Liverpool before being used as an emergency centre-forward in the dying moments of games.
He caught the eye with an excellent performance in his former ground on Sunday, however, scoring the opener that shocked a Cardiff side that had been comfortable defensively up until that point.
Hasselbaink said: “Steve is part of a defensive unit that works together with him. He's come back this season in right shape, with the right frame of mind, and he's a big member in our squad. He's got the experience and know-how, he's an ex-international. For the players it's nice to see him around the place, but let's not forget we can only be strong when we are working as a team, together in a unit.”
