Saturday 13th August 2016

by: Hayden Atkins

Shaun MacDonald has ended his five-year stay at Bournemouth after completing a move to Championship outfit Wigan, the Latics’ website confirmed today.

MacDonald has made the move north having played just over 100 times for the Cherries, joining for a fee believed to be around £250,000 and penning a two-year-deal.

Wigan have been quick to replace former Manchester City man Emyr Huws, who was unable to sustain a place in Wigan's division one team last season, he left the club earlier this week for Cardiff City on a free transfer.

MacDonald featured only three times in the Premier League last season and will be hoping Gary Caldwell can offer him first-team football once again.

He will not be eligible to play in Wigan’s game against Blackburn Rovers this afternoon but is instead expected to go straight into the squad for the game against Birmingham City on Tuesday.

WIGAN SIGN MACDONALD

Wigan Athletic have signed midfielder Shaun MacDonald from Bournemouth for an undisclosed transfer fee.

The 28-year-old, who has made four appearances for Wales, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the DW Stadium after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical on Friday afternoon.

Wigan manager Gary Caldwell toldhis club's official website: "Shaun is a quality addition to the squad. A terrific pro who understands the way we want to play, a skilful midfielder capable of fitting into our system.

"He is a great person too, with a great attitude who has gone through a similar experience at Bournemouth to where we are now, a team coming up from League One to the Championship and playing a certain brand of football.

"The fact he has recent international experience with Wales shows just how highly he is rated."
