Cardiff City MUST pick Adam Le Fondre to end goal drought - he's still the best striker the Bluebirds have got
Saturday 13th August 2016
BY SCOTT JOHNSON
He is still Cardiff’s best striker.
Bluebirds need a front-man who is mobile, smart, hard-working, a good finisher. The best fit happens to be Le Fondre, who is still on the club's books
Granted, it will take time to bed in a new system, but just a couple of games in it is already becoming abundantly clear to everyone that Cardiff City still lack any real cutting edge.
The kind of thrust that a player like Adam Le Fondre would provide.
But where will the Bluebirds find a player like Le Fondre at this stage in the transfer market? Oh yeah, sat just over there.
In recent years, I believe Cardiff have cultivated the deeply unattractive process of bringing in far too many players, shelving some of them before they have had any real opportunity to prove their worth and then quietly ushered them out of the door.
In fairness, the club have since attempted to address this problem and the arrivals have slowed to a trickle, but plenty of those previous players still remain.
One of the more high profile ones was Le Fondre, who required a substantial fee to prise him from Reading. Signed by his idol Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who promptly plonked him on the wing, Le Fondre was eventually moved up front to perform the thankless task of running for two, as Kenwyne Jones roamed around.
Contrary to popular opinion, I think he did a decent job. Admittedly, for a striker with a reputation as a clinical finisher, he did fluff some good chances, but it happens.
Then, like so many others before and after him, he was gone. Despite playing practically every game to that point, he was shipped out on loan to Bolton and pretty much never to be seen again.
Since then, Le Fondre has been little more than a depreciating asset.
Eoin Doyle and Federico Macheda’s career path at the club followed a similar theme, prolific goalscorers tried briefly, then disregarded.
Cardiff is proving a doomed place for strikers and you have to go back to the days of Jay Bothroyd, Michael Chopra and Ross McCormack for their last prolific source of goals.
With no emergency loan window at this level any more, Cardiff have left themselves with just a couple of weeks to resolve this problem. Unfortunately, I’m not holding out much hope of them landing someone of Patrick Bamford’s calibre.
Maybe Frederic Gounongbe may prove the solution, or maybe he will be another footnote like Idriss Saadi.
The signing of Kenneth Zohore also strikes me as rather strange. Pretty unremarkable during his loan spell last season, he has been brought in full time, but remains a very raw prospect.
It feels a bit like he has been parked at the club, like Etien Velikonja before him.
Yet if you were to list the qualities that Cardiff would be looking for in a striker - mobile, smart, hard-working, a good finisher - Le Fondre remains a pretty good fit.
A similar rule applies to midfield, as Cardiff pursue a player akin to Tom Adeyemi.
I know there are certain geographical issues to navigate, as Le Fondre’s loved ones have not relocated to South Wales. His reputation has also taken a battering, as his prolific past seems a rather distant memory.
However, entering the final year of his current deal, it’s time to stick or twist.
With the new ethos being about promoting from within and making the most of what we already have, maybe it’s time to throw Le Fondre, currently relegated to the stiffs, a final chance.
He is still Cardiff’s best striker.

Have to agree after all he had a season at Wolves to prove himself and failed.

Johnson always write total shite. Alf didn't want to play for us, had an appalling goal-scoring record and ended up in a similar situation at Wolves. No point in going back. We have to sign a couple of strikers very soon and offload Alf and Kiko.

Maybe good striker but lousy finisher!

Bullshit he's dreadful in front of goal

Why not try Rhys healey? Proven goal scorer in the development side! Could be out version of Birminghams jack storer. A wildcard that could prove vital

Agreed, quicker he and Macheda leave the better, would let Noone go too if there's any interest in him

Just cause he's had a massive drop in attitude doesn't mean he can't revive himself if he were to be put into the squad and got a few goals then his morale would be boosted straight away. All you've got to is look at his record and you will see that he isn't that bad at all. When he first came to us he looked shite because he was on the wing or playing in a bad system all you can do is give him a chance

He also had plenty of chances to play upfront and plenty of chances to score but very rarely took them. His work rate was excellent, everything else was poor. He has also stated he doesn't want to be here if I remember correctly. He played upfront for the DVP team but didn't stand out there either

Alf is not a long term solution for us.
We don't know what has gone on but it seems like the relationship between player and club has been toxic for a while
Not sure if it can be fixed by a few goals.

No we won't be seeing him in a City shirt again just rip up his contract and move on.

If he's the best striker we have then we are truly stuffed.

This is daft the player came here for money as he didn't want to come here the worst striker here I would give Machada a chance first he is just not good enough where Lefondre just doesn't want to play a terrible attitude of a well payed professional
Sat Aug 13, 2016 3:45 pm
I would say most players move for the money, I don't see an issue with that as long as they work hard for us which I think he did every game until slade banished him away.
I'd rather move him on but while he is here I would start him.
