Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a bid for Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson.

The 27-year-old captained the Iceland squad that made it all the way through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 in France this summer and is being eyed by Villa as a back-up option if they fail to lure Mile Jedinak from Crystal Palace.

According to The Sun and the Daily Mail, Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo views Gunnarsson as "a player who can add steel to a fragile Villa side" as the Midlands outfit look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Gunnarsson, who is currently valued at around £2.1m, moved to the Welsh capital from Coventry City in 2011 and has since gone on to make 198 appearances in all competitions.

Cardiff City are prepared to accept bids of around £2m,with Gunnarsson not in new manager Paul Trollope's plans.

Made it clear the other day that I don't think we'd miss him, and I still think that.

Will admit, though, that I find it strange that clubs like Aston Villa and Norwich are looking at him - when they know he can't get into our team. Has to be something in it, to be fair.

If i'm honest i'd bite their hand off for 2m for him! :thumbright:

Don't sell Gunnarsson!

He has so many qualities to enable us to survive in the Champions;

- leadership
- passion
- commitment

and we are going to sell him to Villa FFS!

Also has anyone noticed that Okeefe has a broken wrist and won't be playing for a while!

It's very well bringing in Wales squad players but Wales are no Real Madrid despite them doing better than expected at the Euros, hence are they players we are bringing in better than what we have? NO

I am currently in despair, c'mon fellow City fans cheer me up please

I really like Gunnars, but Huws has much more to offer: whenever I've seen him play for Wales he has been class. I hope Gunnars doesn't go, but at present he wouldn't get in the team.

Personally, I'm not bothered either way unlike I was with Fabio, but I'm sure if the bid is serious and it's over a mill then the club will accept.

Report: Villa eye deal for Aron Gunnarsson, face Championship competition

HITC

Saturday 13th August 2016

Aston Villa have been linked with Cardiff City’s Aron Gunnarsson.

Iceland's Aron Einar Gunnarsson during the press conference

Aston Villa are eyeing a deal for Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson.

The report claims that the Villans are looking at the Icelandic midfielder as a possible alternative to fellow target Mile Jedinak, though they face competition from Championship duo Derby County and Norwich City.

Villa, under the guidance of owner Tony Xia and newly-appointed boss Roberto Di Matteo, have made a poor start to the season with defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town in the EFL Cup.

It was always going to be challenge for Villa following their disastrous Premier League campaign last season, what with the club having failed to record a competitive win since last February.

But the club have been active in the transfer market this summer, and they are now looking to add some steel following the recent addition of defender James Chester from West Bromwich Albion.

Crystal Palace’s Jedinak is seemingly the club’s number one target, yet a failure to lure him to the Championship will see them turn their attentions to Cardiff’s Gunnarsson.

The Iceland international played a key role during his nation’s run to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, prompting heavy interest from Derby and Norwich as the duo look to bolster their ranks.

Cardiff City and Iceland star Aron Gunnarsson is being linked with a move to a fellow Championship club with Derby County and Norwich City among the interested parties.

Gunnarsson started his pre-season later than his team mates following his exploits in Euro 2016 with Iceland and was not a starter at the weekend when Cardiff got their season underway with a 0-0 draw against Birmingham City.

The 27-year-old has been a key player for Cardiff since signing from Coventry in 2011 and has gone onto make just shy of 200 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals in the process.

Gunnarsson is a real leader on and off the pitch and is a model professional and it was these traits that led to him having the honour of captaining his country at their first ever major international tournament when Iceland made the quarter finals of Euro 2016.

He has earned 53 caps for the Icelandic national team, scoring 2 goals.

Gunnarsson has plenty of weapons in his locker, including what is a mammoth long throw. He also posses a wicked long shot and is prone to scoring the odd wonder goal every now and then, he is a combative midfielder who likes to get stuck in and is good in the tackle.

2 mill is way to much I was thinking more in the region of giving them about 1mill and Gunnarson.

The Bluebirds are keen to reduce their squad size before the transfer window shuts and are likely to listen to credible offers as they look to cut the wage bill before trying to sign the new striker they desperately need.

As stated earlier this year,City will listen to offers on their playing squad.

Reports today claim Aton Villa are set to table a bid for the £2m-rated Iceland star as they look to add some steel to a team manager Roberto Di Matteo fears is too fragile

There are several reports that Derby County and Norwich City are ready to move for Gunnarsson , with the player's future seemingly very uncertain at the Bluebirds.

Despite his exploits with Iceland at Euro 2016, Gunnarsson has struggled to nail down a place in the starting XI in recent times and appears to have found himself further down the pecking order following the arrival of Emyr Huws yesterday.

Gunnarsson has made nearly 200 appearances for Cardiff since joining the club in 2011.

I think that now that Huws is in the club will be doing everything they can to get rid of Gunnarsson before the window closes.
