Absolutely dismal display last night, the players looked as if they had been asked to play the formation for the first time. What the f**k have they been doing all pre-season. Both wing backs were absolute rubbish, No crisp one touch pass and go to help get John or Richards into space to stretch out the game. John and Jazz's movement was shit all night, Gounongbe and Zohore left isolated upfront with the nearest midfield support abut 15 yards behind them although from what I've seen they are absolute shit. I thought Russell Slade was back in charge last night watching all those long balls being hit into the channel for Goudonkey to hold up or run onto.
It almost looks like a 5-4-1 at times and we are carrying no attacking threat going forward with no movement from midfield, the ball momentum either being killed by Ralls or just going backward constantly.
Trollope has a lot of work to do and he needs to sort something quickly, I'd like to see a 4-2-3-1 formation but i doubt that will happen. It's going to be a long season.

Summed up perfectly. Couldn't believe what I was seeing when we started the long ball.

the problem was in midfield we had three players in there and not one of them made forward runs, when we watched wales the chances came from midfield players getting beyond the strikers or breaking the oppositions midfield line, last night everything was infront of rovers and we was far to slow going side toside all night, we need to play more forward passes but to be honest our players arent creative enough to run in behind or carry the ball past a man and thats going to be our problem if we continue in this formation

4-2-3-1 much better, but not sure our fullbacks could cope, apart from Peltier. With Huws supposedly signing this would make room for him as well.

Didn't Wales lose their first 10 games over 2yesr period switching to this formation ...... Expecting Perfection after 2months and 2 competitive games (with one game involving 6 personal changes)is very naive imho

Whilst last night was pretty dire it's way too early to ditch the formation although they really need to make it more like 3-5-2 especially when we have the ball.
We simply didn't have the players last night to play the system intelligently enough.
I don't blame the wing backs so much as what was ahead of them. Noone, Ralls and O'Keefe were all way too far behind Zohore to allow any chance of us playing in the opposition half and forcing the back 3/5 to play short balls with no forward runners available.
Even if we had forward movement Gunnarson and O'Keefe simply don't have the ability to hit those runs.
Let's judge after Sunday. In this formation Immers, Pilkington and Whitts are hugely important and Grounongbe showed much more ability to bring others into the game than Zohore.
Having said all that it doesn't take a football genius to work out we need a goalscorer, let's hope we can either fork out some decent money or uncover a hidden (cheap !!) gem.
By the way, I read on another strand about some rumour of Mutch coming back. If he could stay fit this system is ready made for him playing just behind the striker but I really can't see that one happening, unfortunately.

Did any off you go to or watch the game last night? I seen a very clever formation and loved watching it work, as someone with coaching badges it's lovely to see this at my club. They played very nice football at times and everyone had a good game really apart from zahore. Yes there wasn't a lot going forward but the football and tactical ways way played really impressed me. Noone is normally a winger and this was his first competitive game playing in a completely different formation, so yeah it's still a learning curve for most of our boys but we do Deffo need another striker as even though Gounongbe looks good, I don't think he's the main striker(will happily proved wrong though) his first touch is good, he's got a bit of skill and a good turn of pace. Everybody just needs to stop being so negative like it's all part of change and if you were real supporters you would realise this...

It's the players mun not the bloody formation.

Can't ditch a formation on one bloody game. Yes we was garbage but the players need to take responsibility.

I agree.

Its a bit of both, not enough quality in the middle, Gunnar and O'Keefe to defensive. (Gunnar can go)
I hope we don't have another Slade who is obsessed by one formation, he Trollope talked about flexibility well I seen nothing in that game to suggest that.

Maybe this formation doesn't help though. Not a fan of it and ,with Fabio going, even less so. However, with a couple of new players it might prove me wrong.

Who's coming in though? An average player who can't get into a poor Wigan team but just because he's welsh he's gonna get a 3-4 year contract most probably.

could it just be that we had a poor game? you cannot rip up the plan and change the formation every time you lose. if we win on sunday where will that leave us? its clear we need reinforcements since we've only signed 2 players who weren't already here last year.
although its only natural to jump to knee jerk conclusions, lets see how we start performing when trollope gets to sign a few players in. add a bit of quality into what is a solid back 5, and all of a sudden the whole complexion changes.

Wigan clearly have an issue with him. He went out on loan to a higher league last season so its not as if he was just been rotting away . Either way I don't see a place for Gunnar in our starting 11 so id rather bring in 2m and someone on a lower wage with potential personally.

what surprised me last night was considering trollope was with wales in the summer why did our wingbacks stay so deep, during the summer everytime one of the centre backs got the ball our wing backs were on the touch line and pushed right up the pitch but yesterday when we got the ball our wingbacks didnt push up the pitch once (well jazz didnt),whats the point in trying to get us to play a certain formation cos it worked for wales but then try and change the way that formation is played while using far worse standard of players it just doesnt make sense to me.
