Newcastle United transfers: Magpies have bid for Hull's Mohamed Diame - according to sources

MONDAY 1 AUG 2016

BY LEE RYDER

Magpies aiming to bring in powerful midfielder as they prepare for life after Moussa Sissoko who is being courted by some of Europe's top clubs

Newcastle United have lined up Mohamed Diame as a possible replacement for Moussa Sissoko.

The Magpies are yet to sell the French international, but want Diame to boost their midfield, and the Senegal international is thought to be interested in a move to Tyneside.

Sources in Hull say that United have placed a bid for Diame with the player having a release clause in his contract this summer.

Diame also has just one year left on his current deal meaning this is Hull’s last chance to cash in on the man who scored the goal against Sheffield Wednesday that took them back to the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has plenty of experience of English football having starred for Wigan Athletic, West Ham and the Tigers after moving to the Premier League from Rayo Vallecano in 2009.

Diame and his Hull team-mates are still in a state of shock after the departure of City boss Steve Bruce.

He said last week: “Everyone is really sad because the manager was an important person for us all.

“He looked after us like a father, to be honest, and to see him go is really sad.

“But we can’t do anything to change what has happened, it is done now and all we can do is think about getting prepared for the new season because it is going to be really tough.”

However, Newcastle, who are likely to sell Cheick Tiote and Florian Thauvin this week, are ready to offer him a new career challenge.

The big news this morning is that Paul Pogba appears to be closing on a move to Manchester United.

Pogba has been partying in Las Vegas ahead of flying to the UK and completing his world-record transfer from Juventus.

Keeping his cards close to his chest, Pogba spoke to Sky Sports News HQ's Andy Burton in Vegas, and when asked whether the deal was close to being concluded, he only said "we'll see".

However, sources at Old Trafford told SSNHQ late on Sunday night that the deal is now virtually agreed in principle between the two clubs, with personal terms also close to being confirmed between the player and Manchester United.

Yet the finer details of both aspects of the transfer - including payment of Raiola's fee - are yet to be resolved, with negotiations set to continue this week.

Guardiola confirmed recently that discussions with Everton were ongoing and City are now hopeful a deal is nearing completion.
