Cardiff City fans will have to be patient with Paul Trollope but Eddie Howe's success proves it's worth the wait

By Phil Smith

The Bluebirds are showing some promising signs and The Cherries are an example of what can be achieved

There were two moments early on in this game that showed why this was a significant step up for Cardiff City.

First, young left-back Brad Smith, a relative unknown but an expensive acquisition for Bournemouth, picked up the ball in a bit of space. Cardiff backed off, and looked more than a touch surprised when he kicked into gear when and flew to the byline.

From there on in, he received much closer attention.

Then, two moments of brilliance from £15 million from Jordan Ibe. First, the superb strike to open the scoring, followed by another fizzing effort that left David Marshall rooted to his goal line.

Yet again, Bournemouth have identified two players perfect for their system and their philosophy, and they both look set to shine.

It was fitting that this be the destination for the final game of Cardiff's pre-season, as Bournemouth's journey is one not dissimilar to what Paul Trollope hopes to achieve.

There is stability in the dug-out, a clear identity on the pitch and a squad capable of comfortably fitting in a number of formations.

All are things that the new head coach wants to bring to South Wales.

Yesterday was an example of what a positive start he has made, and how far he has to travel. Fans and the club's hierarchy will have to be patient but Eddie Howe's success shows that the rewards are more than worth waiting for.

This was a good tactical battle between two teams determined to look after the ball and be patient for their opportunities.

Cardiff already look to be happier biding their time in possession and a big difference from last season is that when the ball goes long, it is rarely hopeful. More often than not, it is after space has been created for a wing-back to move forward or for one of the strikers to run off the shoulder of the last defender.

Bournemouth deserved their win, and in the end, as Trollope himself pointed out, the difference was more than likely in the five or six players of serious Premier League quality in their ranks.

Ibe and Smith were the most notable of those, but £10 million striker Benik Afobe was another who looked that touch stronger and sharper over the first five yards than the options Cardiff have in that department.

Even with that in mind, the Bluebirds' created plenty of chances and on another day would expect to have converted at least one of them.

That they grew into the game and ended it playing with such confidence is testament to the impact Trollope has had in a short period.

It is obvious that like Howe, he has able to communicate his ideas clearly and in a way that players can easily digest and implement.

The Championship is notoriously unforgiving and success will not come overnight.

There are, understandably, still chinks in the Cardiff armour, and there will no doubt be frustrating days ahead.

Trollope is effusive about the qualities of his squad and is entirely genuine when he says he already has enough to work with, but Bournemouth's success also shows that investment is a crucial part of getting out of this league and the club should back their man in the coming weeks.

So the pre-season verdict is much to be pleased about and much still to be done.

Cardiff look like they will be one of the fittest sides in the division and it is obvious that there has been a big progression in this department off the field over the summer.

That has been a key part of Trollope's vision and it is in these sorts of areas that he can begin to develop that legacy.

Success is never guaranteed in this sport and no one knows how the team will navigate one of the most formidable collection of teams ever seen at this level.

If Trollope's team can continue to show such clear signs of progression, however, then it will be worth sticking with even through the inevitable times when results dip.

The confidence, consistency and thoroughly undramatic manner in which their opponents continue to go about their business shows the benefits of that stability.

" be one of the fittest sides"? The first team have only had 2 full 90 min games pre season. Only half a dozen of those played the full 90. Awful pre season pre I'd say. Intimations of Manga being unfit and Dikgacoi also unfit ( as usual). In my humble opinion, fitness will initially be a problem.

Its not all about a couple of pre season friendlies when it comes to fitness. Im an athelte and I can tell you it would likely do little more than sharpen you up a bit at best. I bet there is alot more that goes on behind the scenes and im sure we are in good hands!

squad are in very good condition – pre-season has gone perfectly up until this point,” said the then Reds skipper in the summer of 2013. (steven gerrard)

“Personally, it’s been the most difficult pre-season we’ve had and the training has been brutal. We’ve got a fitness coach (Ryland Morgans) in who has been here for close to eight months now and has put us through our paces.

“I think the quality in our performances has shown in the games. We’re yet to concede a goal and we’re scoring freely. So far so good – there’s still a long way to go and a lot of hard work to be put in, but we couldn’t be in better condition at this stage.”

Awful? They had 4 or 5 games where nearly every first-team player has played 30-60 mins. In Germany the 1st 11 with Immers pilks Fabio whitts etc played the 60 min game then came back out and played the 1st half of the next 60 in game. Also Semi Ajayi played both 60 in games and looked good and fit. And as said matches are getting your sharpness etc up. Sure they have been doing a lot more besides

Because we haven't had many pre season games doesn't mean fitness is going to be an issue, training plays a huge part.. the games don't come to much fitness but to get out on the pitch and get the feel back.

You need ability as well and I think we will come up short

We will be a hard working team but lack that cutting edge
