The Bale role...

Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:44 am

...at CCFC. Assuming we're adopting the Welsh way of playing, either Pilkington or Nooone to play the Bale role I'd imagine. IMHO, Nooone would be better off in the middle where he has space to go either way around the opposition, as opposed to on the right / left wing where he is too predictable (cutting inside) / lacks the pace to go past a quick full back.
As it looks as if we aren't spending much money I'd also think that Zohore could be playing the Robson Kanu role. If I'm right, it's a bit of a worry where the goals will come from but we'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

Qiute right, I do have reservations playing what is essentially a tournament formation in a full 46 game league campaign. It's too defensive. I hope Trollope will switch to different formations during and before games to suit.

Remember, N.Ireland were an inferior team to us and handled that formation with ease. The difference was Bale. Noone or Pilks can't make the difference on they're own like Bale can

Really good points.
I think (hope) that unlike his predecessor, PT will have s few aces up his sleeve where formations are concerned :bluescarf:

I don't think its a defensive formation at all and the notion that it will only be success at international level is curious to say the least. The success or otherwise of this system depends in my view on the quality of the wingbacks and their ability to get up and down the park.I think in Fabio we have a player tailor made for this position and if other players think they are quality then they should have no trouble in stepping up to the plate. After watching some turgid, dated style of play its nice to see a man grabbing his chance by the bollox and giving it a go.

I do agree that Cardiff have the players in the Defence and Midfield to play this formation. I am not against it's implementation.

You are right that this system relies heavily on the quality and intensity of the wingbacks.

Whether it's a defensive formation or not? Nobody is quite sure on that yet? I am willing to backtrack and wait on my assessment that it's defensive. We shall see :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

I believe formation's should suit the players not the manager. Nearly all Slade's problems were due to his insistence that the players should adapt to his 'lopsided 4-4-2' which simply didn't work as he didn't have the players to fit the system.

I can't say I'm totally convinced we have the players to fit a 5-3-2 but at first sight things are looking good. I had the same doubt about Wales going into the Euro's so hopefully I will get things wrong again and the system turns out to be a winner

Id say we have a lot more players that fit that role than we do 4-4-2

I wonder if Kadeem Harris can blossom? He's the fastest player we currently have... Or perhaps he could be developed at right wing back?
