People were left "horrified and embarrassed" by the mountains of rubbish left on the beach
Children playing amongst empty bottles, food cartons and discarded cans - this was the scene as a mountain of rubbish was left on Barry Island beach earlier this week.
As temperatures rose to above 30°C on Monday and Tuesday, hundreds of people flocked to Barry Island to enjoy the sun, sea and sunshine on the hottest day of the year.
But local residents have been left furious after large piles of rubbish were left on the shoreline.

A number of pictures and videos showing the extent of the leftover rubbish have been posted on social media - with many users branding the litter a disgrace, irresponsible and 'gross'.

Staff at O'Shea's Fish and Chip Shop on the island were one of the local businesses who captured images showing the state of the beach and said they were 'horrified' by what they saw.
Owner Craig O'Shea said: " I was horrified by what I saw and embarrassed.
"We have so many foreign visitors to Barry Island these days I dread to think what they must have thought!
"The lack of response by the council has been disappointing plus the ridiculous comment to ban take-aways is not the answer."

Writing on her blog Family Days Tried and Tested , Deborah Hitchins from Newport, also described the litter as "utterly disgusting, shameful and sadly not necessary".
She said: "Barry beach in South Wales is lovely, it’s undergone a regeneration programme over the past few years and has oodles to offer for families, tourists and those whom love the ocean.
"The beach was packed today and the utter disregard that sun seekers took to it was just awful.

"Myself and the 11 year old walked twenty paces, TWENTY!!, and picked up what we coulld. It really was shocking.
"Where’s the respect? What goes through people’s minds? I don’t understand why people would want to leave this behind. It’s wrong.

These two young litter pickers were spotted among a number of other local residents voluntarily picking up piles of rubbish left on the beach.
Staff at O'Shea's Fish and Chip Shop said the girls - who are not known - decided to tackle the problem themselves, putting every bit of litter they could into black bin bags.
Craig O'Shea said: "The two girls who stated the clean up should be congratulated!"
Vale of Glamorgan Council have been contacted for comment.

Completely embarrassing. I've recently come back from France and I've previously been to Brussels and Amsterdam - all were a million times cleaner with no litter anywhere. A sad shame people in countries just across the channel are genuinely better people who actually care about their countries.
Some of the 'creatures' in our country are a disgrace. Why can't we look after our country and help make places like Barry Island clean and enjoyable for each other?

No one should be surprised here! 
Just look at our streets, gardens and country lanes. Strewn with litter, cigarette and chewing gum remains and with Fly Tipping of household goods on the up!
It's disgraceful, unhealthy and paints a picture of our communities and the society we have created; one of an increasingly selfish, uncaring and unthinking minority who have a big effect on the majority
Sadly, far too many people simply don't care and simply can't be arsed to clear up what they've consumed, as it involves thought and effort!
I travel to Europe and the USA frequently and Ross (Tonteg Bluebird) is right; they are light years ahead of us in their social and personal habits!

People can blame the council all they like but it's the scumbags that throw their litter on the flaw that have no respect for their environment that are to blame.
I've just come back from Estonia and couldn't believe how clean all the beaches and forrests were. it's because the people wouldn't dream of littering their coast not because there's not enough bins, I walked for miles through forest and beach and didn't see 1 bin!

Not to generalize too much but It always seems to be youngsters.
Im only (just) over the 30's line but think I was brought up in the "respect your neighbourhood" view.
I get so frustrated when I see these as*holes opening their cars and throwing mcdonalds bags, bottles etc out the window. We should adapt policies from other countries - fine the fkers!

Spent time in so called poorer countries like Honduras and Belize, and they are far tidier than this country. It seems a British disease, and I think we in Wales are the worse of the lot.

Spot on mate most scenarios there is a bin a few metres away too, makes you laugh really because people are quick enough to moan and call the country a s**t hole but they don't make the effort
