Premier League, EFL & FA introduce new player behaviour rules

Sky Sports

Wednesday 20th July 2016

Yellow cards could now be shown when two or more players from a team surround a match official
Plans designed to reduce "intolerable behaviour" by players and managers in English football have been announced.

In a statement, the Premier League, English Football League and Football Association said poor conduct has reached "unacceptable levels".

Starting this season, red cards will be issued to players who confront match officials and use offensive language or make gestures towards them.

Behaviour within the technical areas will also be more rigorously enforced.

Not one player has been sent off in the Premier League for insulting or abusive language towards a match official in the last five seasons.

But Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore said there has been concern "for some time" that players have been "overstepping the mark".

"It is our collective position that these types of behaviour should no longer be tolerated," he added.

"Things happen in the heat of the moment during fast and highly competitive football. We still want to see the passion fans enjoy and demand, but players and managers have to be aware there are lines that should not be crossed."

Offences which could earn players a yellow card

Visibly disrespectful behaviour to any match official;
An aggressive response to decisions;
Confronting an official face to face;
Running towards an official to contest a decision;
Offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards match officials;
Physical contact with any match official in a non-aggressive manner;
A yellow card for at least one player when two or more from a team surround a match official.
New red card offences

If a player confronts match officials and uses offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures towards them;
Physical contact with match officials in an aggressive or confrontational manner.

Crikey, Rooney will spend much of his time watching from the stands this coming season. The amount of times he has been seen mouthing aggressive abuse at the ref is unbelievable. Not only Rooney but others too,

I am disappointed that that there is nothing (to my knowledge) about holding and wrestling opposition players in the box. That has to stop. Although Martin Skrtel is no longer in the Premier league it goes on to the point of being a complete joke. Remember Skrtel wrestling Caulker to the ground at least 3 times when we played them at Anfield in our brief and disappointing Premier league season? Was dreadful and happens every week (even by us sometimes - Peltier especially).

See it every week in football. Not sure why, because refs rarely if ever change a decision, and yet almost every time a penalty is awarded the ref is surrounded by players swearing at him. Does it happen in any other sport, or is this total lack of respect to officials unique to football players (John McEnroe excluded of course).

Ha ha true.

Of course these new rules will be presented to each club and proliferated around all the structures.... will be interesting to see if the refs seriously implement. Should be an interesting first few weeks. I guess there will be some initial leniency and then and incident which will force the ref to adhere to the rules and then others follow.

I think it's a good idea on the language front and two or more players chasing the ref, good rule imo.

One thing I give to rugby is the whole way the structure is around the officials, something that has been long overdue.
