' NEW OFFICIAL FIFA WORLD RANKINGS ANNOUNCED '

Wales move above England in new Fifa world rankings after a stunning Euro 2016

Thursday 14th July 2016

BY PAUL ABBANDONATO

Chris Coleman’s side have risen 15 places and stand just behind Spain, Brazil and Italy, leapfrogging England who have dropped two spots

Chris Coleman's Wales have risen up to 11th in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings, leapfrogging Euro 2016 rivals England.

Wales have jumped up 15 places from 26th and are the biggest top 20 movers after reaching the semi-finals out in France.

England, by contrast, have dipped down two places. They held 11th spot, but have slipped to 13th after being embarrassingly defeated by Iceland in the last 16 of the Euros.

Wales are in exalted company, standing directly behind Euro winners Portugal, France, Spain, Brazil and Italy.

Next come Uruguay in 12th place and England in 13th.

Argentina still top the rankings with Belgium remaining second, despite being beaten 3-1 by Wales in an epic Euro quarter-final in Lille.

Iceland, who like Wales wowed the world with their stunning efforts out in France, have been rewarded for their efforts with a 12-place rise to 22nd.

It's a far cry for Wales from August 2011 when, under Gary Speed, they hit a record low of 117th in the world. Speed described the position as embarrassing and vowed to do something about it, which he did.

Wales dipped badly again during Coleman's first year in charge, but began rising in the world order and have joined the elite after shining in the Euros.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal, who beat Wales in the semi-finals, have jumped into sixth position.

Wales lost 2-1 to England in the Euros, but still topped the group after defeating Slovakia and Russia.

Agree...and look at Belgium, who we've beaten twice in recent times!

Very true, however they also won very few games as most of their results were draws.

I'm pleased that we've moved up but I thought we's be higher. I still think the FIFA rankings are as 'untransparent' as the rest of their organisation.

If there was a World Corruption Ranking table, FIFA would top it followed by the Mafia, Russia and Robert Mugabe.

Still, I'm looking forward to singing We're Better Than You and Iceland next season when the natives get cheeky.
