Gareth Bale was overlooked but two of Chris Coleman's other stars were named

Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey have been named in the Euro 2016 team of the tournament.

Gareth Bale was overlooked by UEFA's panel of technical observers with Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo picked as the striker.

Ramsey and Allen join a star-studded list including the likes of Toni Kroos, Antoine Griezmann and Pepe.

Arsenal midfielder Ramsey was heavily tipped to make the team after landing the joint highest number of assists alongside Eden Hazard. Despite missing the semi-final through suspension, he earned plaudits for his excellent work-rate and end product.

Allen's inclusion came as something of a surprise, but is fitting reward for a sequence of excellent displays.

The panel who picked the team included Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as the likes of David Moyes, Gareth Southgate and Packie Bonner.

Allen was ever-present as Wales shocked Europe to reach the final four. With rumours linking him with a move away from Liverpool, this latest acknowledgement could see his value rocket even further.

Wales should stay ahead of England in the world rankings for the next two years, says Stan Collymore

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "After quite a bit of deliberation, the observers chose a team that features the best performing players from the best performing teams at UEFA EURO 2016.

"We have chosen dominant central defenders; full-backs who can defend and attack; deep-lying midfielders who can control the game and dynamic, flexible and creative attackers, all of whom have the ability to create and score goals. We believe that the selected XI represents the best of the competition."

Bale was not selected despite his three goals, scoring from free-kicks in Wales' opening two games.

Portugese captain Ronaldo went off injured during the final but was selected in the team after scoring a sequence of brilliant goals throughout the tournament, including a brilliant back-heel against Hungary.

Bizarrely, UEFA's own Player performance barometer had him ranked as the third best performer, with Dimitri Payet number one.

Antoine Griezmann was named as winner of both the Golden Boot and the tournament's best player award, with Renato Sanches lifting the young player award.

Zoltan Gera is currently leading the public poll for goal of the tournament for his strike against eventual winners Portugal, with Hal Robson-Kanu winning the BBC award.

Payet was taken off every game and didn't even start one so how they have him in before Bale surprises me. As for the two players in the team they were superb and fully deserving. Such a shame that Ramsey was suspended for the semi final for me I thought he was the best midfielder in the tournament and gave us a real cutting edge.

Rambo was excellent in every game that he played.

Allen was very very good up to the semi final when he was poor, giving away possession and getting caught on the ball on a number of occasions.

Great for Wales to have two players in the team mind!

Payet had to be in it. If you had spent any time in France over the last month you'd see he was their major star of the tournament. I was there for ten days, I saw more of Payet on TV and in cardboard cut outs in shops than the mates I went with.
