By Phil Smith

Saturday 9th July 2016

Paul Trollope's return from Euro 2016 means that Cardiff City's pre-season is really about to begin in earnest.

Of course, most of the squad returned on Monday and have started preparation for the new campaign a Champneys resort. Aron Gunnarsson has of course been playing his part in Iceland's stunning success and will now presumably have a bit of time off before his return.

Their fixtures start on Wednesday, so we've put together a guide as to what you can expect from some pre-season fixtures with a difference...

v Forest Green Rovers :bluebird:
When: Wednesday July 13th, 7.45 pm KO

Where: The New Lawn Stadium

How much: Adult £11, Senior Citizen £9, Young Adult (16-21) £5, Junior (Under 16) £3, Kids (Under 11) Free

What to expect: The club have confirmed that a Cardiff City XI will travel to this fixture, so we're not expecting to see a raft of first team faces involved in this one. Still, there should be a decent away following for the first full game of pre-season.

v Shrewsbury Town :bluebird:
When: Saturday July 16th, 3pm KO

Where: Greenhous Meadow

How much: Adult £10, Concession £5

What to expect: The full first team squad will travel to the team that dumped the Bluebirds' out of the FA Cup last season. Remember, this is far from your average pre-season friendly. The game will be played in four thirty minute periods. Our presumption is that it will allow the managers to make regular, wholesale changes without disrupting the flow of the game too much.

The German tour :ayatollah: :bluebird:
v RW Ahlen
When: Wednesday July 20th, 7pm KO local time

Where: Wersestadion, Ahlen. The stadium has a capacity of around 12,500.

How much: N/A - but away fans welcome

Who are they? RW Ahlen play in the Regionalliga West, a German semi-pro league based in Duisburg.

What to expect: A no-frills, two half, 90 minute pre-season friendly.

OSNABRUCK TOURNAMENT
When: Saturday July 23rd

Where: Stadion an der Bremer Brucke. The stadium has a capacity of around 18,500

How much: N/A - but away fans welcome

Who are the teams?
VFL Osnaburck play in the third tier of German football.

FC St Pauli play in the second divison and have become something of a cult club due to the left-wing politics and social activism of their fan base.

Of course, also taking part are the genuine German giants Borussia Monchengladbach, who aren't playing Cardiff but will be in action twice throughout the day.

What to expect? In another twist from your typical pre-season format, all of these games will be one 60 minute period. Any level games will go straight to penalties.

Full schedule (KO times local)

15:30 - Cardiff City – FC St. Pauli
16:45 - FC St. Pauli – Bor. Mönchengladbach
18:00 - VfL Osnabrück – Cardiff City
19:15 - Bor. Mönchengladbach – VfL Osnabrück

FC St Pauli are known for their passionate fanbaseFC St Pauli are known for their passionate fanbase

v VFL Bochum
When: Tuesday July 26th, 7pm KO local time

Where: Stadion am Schloss Strunkede, Herne. A neutral venue home to SC Westfalia Herne. Capacity 32,000

How much: N/A - but away fans welcome

Who are they? They have Bundesliga stalwarts for decades but currently play in the second tier. You'll know a few of their players; Tim Hoogland recently played at Fulham while Thomas Eisfield us a former Arsenal youngester.

What to expect? The pre-season tour ends as it begins, with your standard 90 minute match

v Exeter City :bluebird:
When: Thursday July 28th, 7.30 pm kick-off

Where: St James Park (Exeter)

How much: Adult £8, Senior/Student £5, Under-18 £3.

What to expect: Sandwiched in between the Germany tour and the game with Bournemouth, this is another 'Cardiff City XI' game. The format is standard bur we presume there will not be a great deal of regular first team players in action

Cardiff finish their pre-season against BournemouthAlex Revell wheels away after giving Cardiff City the lead at Bournemouth
v Bournemouth :bluebird: :bluebird:
When: Saturday July 30th

Where: Vitality Stadium

How much: Adult £10, Concessions £7, Under-16 £5

What to expect: This is the final pre-season game just a week before the Championship season starts. A 90 minute game in which you can expect a strong Bluebirds' XI.
