"Slightly OTT celebrations, in my humble opinion."

Controversial TV presenter Piers Morgan sparked a furious reaction from Wales fans after criticising the Welsh football team for their "over the top" homecoming parade yesterday.

Morgan questioned why tens of thousands lined the streets to welcome home the Euro 2016 semi-finalists, insisting they were not worthy of such adulation as they did not win the tournament. He even went on to suggest the celebrations would have left the Welsh rugby team less than impressed.

The comments saw many Wales fans take Morgan to task, with Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins, Ashes-winning cricketer Simon Jones and sports presenter Gabby Yorath all hitting back.

Following the conclusion of last night's party at Cardiff City Stadium, Morgan tweeted: "The Wales football team do realise they didn't even make the #Euro2016 final, right?

"Slightly OTT celebrations, in my humble opinion."

Many Welsh supporters were left irritated and infuriated by the comments, which had mirrored other gripes form some English fans on social media.

Welsh Politician Jenkins replied: "Such a humble opinion... as a nation we are proud and your words will never ruin that for us! #GorauChwaraeCydChwarae."

Morgan was reminded of England's similar open top bus celebrations after reaching the semi-finals if Italia 90, while several concluded he would be incapable of understanding the bond between a small nation and their team.

Following the torrent of criticism, Morgan responded by saying: "I just prefer ticker-tape receptions for teams that actually win things, sorry. Always have."

When one supporter suggested yesterday's events were not about coming first but about a group of proud players wanting to share their greatest performance with the fans they respect so much, Morgan responded: "Actually, sport is all about coming first."

He continued: "Life is about winning at whatever level you compete."

At this point, sports presenter Gabby Logan, daughter of former Wales boss Terry, chipped in, tweeting: "No it's not, Piers is wrong. But I am up early to take a child to a sports event so I don't have time to debate."

An unrepentant Morgan continued: "'It's not the winning that matters, it's the taking part' - the mantra of every losing British sporting team for the last 100 years.

"Any team with Bale in it has a chance to do well. Just save the ticket-tape receptions for when you win something!"

He added: "I bet Wales' rugby stars aren't overly impressed."

Again, after it was pointed out a number of the Welsh rugby team have offered great words of support, Morgan was not for changing his opinion.

"I guess I prefer my sporting achievements to be measured in silverware," he added, before replying to another disgruntled supporter: "What will you do if they actually win something? Throw a party on the Moon?"

Yesterday's celebrations were heralded as a great success and a fitting end to an unforgettable few months for the Welsh nation as huge crowds took to the streets to offer their support.

Arsenal fan Morgan is no stranger when it comes to angering Welshmen. He is a regular harsh critic of Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey, with t he Wales star previously refusing to shake his hand at a public function .

piers morgan is an attention seeking, vile, slimy, gutter rat of an individual.

however, on this very rare occasion, i agree with him. open top bus parades and the like should be reserved for cup wins, not coming 3rd or 4th.

He's always been a self-promoting parasite. Famous for being controversial just like that other useless-cunt Katie Hopkins. Always disliked him and now even more after reading about snubbing Ramsey.

I guess it was up to the Welsh public to decide if there was anything worth celebrating and they seem to have decided in impressive numbers.

He plays to the cheap seats every time. Not a big Clarkson fan but fair play to him for punching Morgan on the dish.

With an open top bus tour around Luton I imagine. Just like they did in 1990.

If you look very carefully you can see Piers Morgan at the back with his autograph book.

Spending millions and millions of pounds on an old woman, to celebrate her 90th birthday is over the top, did not hear him complain about that.

That scum should be in jail after what he did in taping families who were desperate to find their daughters and they were dead plus made up stories about our brave soldiers . The man and I use the word man loosely should not have any response he is not worthy of it.

When it was announced I thought it was OTT personally, didn't think the bus was needed, a celebration along the lines of when city for to the FA Cup final would have been fine.

However upon seeing the reaction of the general public on the streets of the parade, not necessarily football fans it's clear the people of Wales had a need to thank the players. I think it's a great coming together of people. The parade might not have been warranted in some people's opinions but the people wanted it. Goes along with the together stronger theme.

Great scenes.

Wales as a team and fan unit need not answer to anyone, our pride passion and player/fan togetherness got us to the semi finals of Euro16. Our 1st major tournament in over 50yrs if you don't like it Simples Feck off. It's our choice it's our togetherness it's the one thing England can't grasp it's their issue not ours.
They will never understand Welsh pride, I excelled at my job on a island full of all sorts of nationals, working for millionaires. Why? Because I am full of Pride, Welsh Pride and it rubs off on everything I do. Feck off England and piers as you can't buy that so how do you arrogant fecks like them apples
Ha Rant over
