Have E liquids improved your health?

Sat Jul 09, 2016 3:05 am

I do not vape myself but am convinced that vaping has given my dad several more years of life! Smoking is an awful addiction but I think that we now have a great tool to help people break away and improve the quality of their life.

As far as I can see if the conditions they are made in are not exactly a clean room or perfectly sanitized then surely the PG will prevent bacterial contamination, so DIY juice must be almost safe as safe as factory bought.

My only slight concern is how safe is the flavour which is generally food grade? The consensus from experts seems to be that it is 99% safer than smoking but we still do not know what the long term risks could be.

The bulk of E Liquids are made up of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine which seem to be incredibly safe.Despite the doubts I think vaping should definately be encouraged over smoking. Im really not sure what this TPD will do to the industry but it sounds like it has been badly thought out.

Interesting facts about PG

"Propylene glycol is used in air sanitization and hard surface disinfection and dipropylene glycol is used in air sanitization."

"Propylene glycol and dipropylene glycol were first registered in 1950 and 1959, respectively, by the FDA for use in hospitals as air disinfectants."

PG is one of the most powerful bactericides and virucides known, when dispersed as an aerosol. This is why it is used as the carrier in the nebulisers used by lung transplant patients.

A 3 year study of the clinical application of the disinfection of air by Propylene glycol vapors in a children's convalescent home showed a marked reduction in the number of acute respiratory infections occurring in the wards treated with both propylene and triethylene glycols. Whereas in the control wards 132 infections occurred during the course of the three winters, there were only 13 such instances in the glycol wards during the same period."

The acute oral toxicity of propylene glycol is very low, and large quantities are required to cause perceptible health damage in humans.Propylene glycol is an approved food additive for dog food under the category of animal feed and is generally recognized as safe for dogs

And vegetable Glycerine....

Vegetable Glycerine has very low toxicity when ingested; its LD50 oral dose (lethal dose) for rats is 12600 mg/kg and 8700 mg/kg for mice.

Glycerol is of low toxicity when ingested, inhaled, or in contact with skin
The NOACE for local irritant effects to the upper respiratory tract is 165 mg/m3
Glycerol is of a low order of acute oral and dermal toxicity with LD50 (Lethal) values in excess of 4000 mg/kw bw.
Glycerol has low potential to irritate the skin and the eye
Glycerol is not a skin irritant
Glycerol does not induce gene mutations in bacterial strains, chromosomal effects in mammalian cells or primary DNA damage in vitro
Overall, glycerol is not considered to possess genotoxic potential
No effects on fertility and reproductive performance were observed
No further work is indicated by this study, because of the low hazard potential of this substance.
The chemical was flagged for as a low human health priority.

What are your opinions on E Liquids?

Have they made a difference to you?

Do you think they are safe?

I've been using e-liquid for a while now with no noticeable side-effects and have never felt better.
