Wales football team set to snub return to Principality Stadium as squad want to remain at Cardiff City home :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Demand for tickets is expected to soar following the team's Euro 2016 success

The Wales football team look set to snub a return to the Principality Stadium and continue to play their home matches at Cardiff City Stadium for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Demand for tickets is expected to soar following the team's Euro 2016 success, and there have been suggestions home games could be moved back to the 74,000-capacity Principality to accommodate the increased interest.

Wales moved away from the Principality, formerly the Millennium Stadium, in 2011 because of falling crowds, but there were also complaints from some members of the squad about the playing surface.

That situation has been resolved with the laying of a new Desso pitch but players are keen to remain at a ground they feel they have made home during a remarkable upturn in fortunes.

Cardiff City Stadium's capacity is 33,000, and the team's opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova on September 5 is expected to be a sell-out.

The final decision will be made by FAW bosses, but manager Chris Coleman has left them in no doubt about what he and the squad would prefer.

“Cardiff City Stadium is our home," he said.

“It is where we get 30,000 sellouts and where we get fantastic electric atmospheres.

“It is where, in the last campaign, the feeling that was generated by our supporters had a huge impact on the team.

“We made a choice and I would imagine we will stick to that.

“Would I rather be playing at Cardiff City Stadium where there are 30,000 mad screaming Taffs breathing down the opposition's necks and our boys feeding off that?

“Or playing in front of 50,000 at the Millennium Stadium where the atmosphere is fantastic but is a different type of atmosphere?

“We should remember what has served us well and not mess about with the ingredients of the structure in the last campaign and keep building on it.

“We don’t want to go too far away from it because it has served us well.”

Despite the potential larger pay day on offer from big Principality crowds, the FAW are aware of the bigger picture of making sure they give Coleman's team the best chance of building on their success.

Chris Coleman wants Wales to stay at Cardiff City Stadium

By Stephen Turner

Chris Coleman says he is positive about the future after Wales reached the last four at Euro 2016

Chris Coleman says Wales should not "mess about" with a winning formula by moving to the Millennium Stadium for World Cup qualifying.

Football's stock is at an all-time high in the rugby-loving principality thanks to the achievement of Coleman's side in reaching the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

Thousands turned out at Cardiff's biggest venue - now named the Principality Stadium - just to watch their defeat to Portugal on a big screen.

But Coleman wants to stick at the 33,000-capacity Cardiff City Stadium, where Wales conceded just one goal in five unbeaten games during qualifying for France.

Speaking at a final press conference in Dinard before boarding the plane for a Cardiff homecoming parade, the manager said: "Cardiff City Stadium is our home,

"We get 30,000 sellouts where the atmosphere is electric. It's where in the last campaign a feeling was generated by our supporters that had a huge impact on the team. We shouldn't forget that

If you want a ticket you'll be able to buy a tournament one easy as people don't choose them early on.

Brilliant of Coleman to get his view in early. Hopefully the blazers will listen to him - even though it will annoy our cousins down the road. Wales should not need to chase the money too much and it's not as if they are glamorous opposition in our World Cup qualifying group.

If they priced tickets like they did for the Finland game all those years ago they may get near filling the Millennium Principality stadium, but if it's on a school night a lot of kids (who would make up a lot of the new fans) would not be able to go anyway.
A cracking atmosphere down at our place will put fear into the opposition.

In terms of finance from the Euros, Wales should be in line for around €14m at today's exchange rates £11,951,106.20p, probably round it up to £12m or more for business rates... Plus any other commercial and sponsorship deals.

Euro 2016 prize money
All 24 teams will receive a participating fee of €8m.
During the group phase there are also performance bonuses of €1m for a win and €500,000 for a draw.
Once UEFA EURO 2016 enters its knockout phase, there are no more performance bonuses.
Instead, the teams participating in the round of 16 will receive €1.5m, the eight quarter-finalists will receive an additional payment of €2.5m.
The financial reward for reaching the semi-finals is an extra payment of €4m.

Why hand money over to WRU?

Tan will build a new stand if he can get funding, he's done it before.

If the FAW want to spend some cash we could get the capacity up.

An all round, red seated, second tier and we can share the facility. Upgrade the exterior so that it can be all blue or all red dependent on the team playing and you have a peffect sized international stadium and a lower tier for CCFC.

Get it done. It makes sense. ;)

Does it matter where we play,it depends on how many tickets we sell for a particular match? 60k+ Principality,30k Cardiff,20k Swansea,15k Wrexham. After all we have NO Welshman in Capital side so why should Cardiff City Stadium get all the games?

Of course it matters where a national side plays and it should always be the capital city. Principality as nice as it is, is too big. Coleman says he and the team love it at CCS and for good reason.

Wrexham to host international football? Rubbish.

It's not even a football league ground and apart from one stand is very outdated and not suitable for international matches.

Wales have played at Wrexham many times and the North Walians are great supporters of the National team,so OK for friendlies and when CROWDS of only 15k are expected.

Watching the BBC coverage yesterday they were interviewing some Welsh FA bigwig on the bus as it made it's way to the stadium - didn't get his name.

Seemed to suggest that they would play at the rugby ground, probably a high profile friendly though rather than a qualification game.

Also said that the rugby stadium hadn't been used for football since Wales lost there to England a few years ago and that the stadium would need to be used for football again before the Champions League Final which is due here of course.

Not sure why - perhaps the infrastructure and stewarding etc all need to be tested in a footballing context before the Final.

That makes sense about a test event at the rugby stadium before the Champions League Final.
Maybe a chance to get a Wales game against Argentina or Chile, they are always on the look out for a big payday too.

Personally, I would arrange a friendly (pre Moldova) in the Millennium Stadium against an average team. I would do this to gauge what sort of interest is out there. If the Portugal screening is anything to go by, the interest may be there.

We should at least try to strike whilst the iron is hot as this could be our only chance to knock rugby off its perch for good.

Having said that, I would 100% prefer a full CCS than only 50,000 in the Millennium Stadium with 20,000 empty seats.
