CHRIS GUNTER / CARDIFF CITY?

Chris Gunter: Reading

Gunter is another that The Bluebirds could look at as an option in defence. Coming through Cardiff's academy, the 26 year-old has already made 72 appearances for his country. Having been ever-present for Wales, Gunter has won the hearts of the country and could do the same for the Cardiff City faithful. Moving back to the Championship after a year with Tottenham Hostpur, Gunter seems to have found his level and could be seen as one of the most consistent full-backs in the league. Less than £1 million could be enough to prize the Reading man away from England and back into his homeland. However, rumours have linked Celtic with a move and if true, the lure of Champions League football could be difficult to resist.

How would he fit in?

Ideally, every manager wants two players per position so there is competition for places. At the moment Cardiff only have three full backs in the form of Lee Peltier, Fabio and Scott Malone. Gunter would give Peltier something to think about and would possibly replace him as City's first choice right back. His attack minded attitude would give The Bluebirds and extra dimension going forward and would replicate the position he currently occupies for Wales.

Reading fans are split over him. All agree he's a 6/10 every week but some feel they could do better. Others think they should settle for what they've got.

Personally, I think with Peltier and Fabio we have two players that can play better at right back. If only Gunter could cross and pass better!

Declan John is also an option at full-back so if there is a spare £1m knocking about it could be spent far better elsewhere.

I don't think it's in defence we have a problem we need attacking goal scoring players ie two wingers and a proven striker

Declan John isn't good enough. He will leave for League 1 or League 2 football soon.

Gunter is clearly inconsistent- there has never been any interest in him from the Premier League since Spurs. An indicator, in my opinion, that he is no better than Championship level and therefore no better than what we have.
