Lionel Messi 'given 21-month jail term' in Spain
Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, Spanish media say.
His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.2m; $4.6m) between 2007 and 2009.
During the trial, prosecutors said tax havens in Belize and Uruguay were used to conceal earnings from image rights.
But Lionel Messi said he "knew nothing" about it.

I agree - he has enough money and general clout to be able to wriggle out of actually doing the time.
It's awful but true that the super rich elite cana fford to flout the law.

BY the way - any chance we could start a rumour and get Ronaldo arrested too? Preferably before kick off.

CHELSEA MEET WITH MESSI?
Where to start this morning? How about Chelsea reportedly looking to sign Lionel Messi?
The Barcelona superstar was sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud yesterday, but is not expected to do any time behind bars.
The Sun reports that Messi's father, Jorge, who represents him, has met with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on his personal superyacht in the last 10 days.
It is also reported that Chelsea are willing to offer a £110m transfer fee and would pay the forward £800,000-a-week.

I wonder after all the fuss about foreigners sponging and brexit etc. how many people will complain that were letting a known tax fraudster in to the country. I thought one of the conditions of this points system (that will never come into place btw) was that we don't let criminals in.

to be fair, he will be pay back every penny he owed, plus interest, and a massive fine. if he fails to come up with a fine he will go to jail.
its not like google (or any other massive corporation) getting cut a deal by HMRC.
the reality is that some of these tax dodges are very complex indeed, far beyond the understanding of anyone on here. as such many sail very close to the wind. messi would have given his permission to his accountants and advisors to pay as little tax as possible. however, rightly, ignorance is not an excuse, and messi will get his comeuppance.
