The best anthem in the world

By Media Wales

Sunday 3rd July 2016

Even English TV pundits are beginning to say listening to the Welsh anthem makes the hairs stand up on the back of their neck.

How can it not? This, too, is part of the TogetherStonger, pride and passion mantra that drives the players on.

The Welsh players didn’t always sing the anthem and that used to really annoy fans, particularly as the rugby team belted it out with such gusto.

Gary Speed made it mandatory to sing, Chris Coleman has carried that on and his No2 Osian Roberts, who is in charge of the age-grade teams, insists players from under-16s upwards follow suit.

Roberts is a proud Welsh speaker himself and helped the Anglos in the side learn the words phonetically.

It is why Ashley Williams, who comes from the Midlands, sings as loudly as anyone and why James Chester, from Warrington, and Hal Robson-Kanu, from London, are there belting out the words in unison with the fans.

Wales’ strength is that they are very much the sum of their parts. Every player knows his exact role and the style of play expected. Be comfortable in possession and pass the ball.

Every Welsh age-grade side plays in that manner, so when players step up into the senior side the promotion is seamless.

While Hodgson dilly-dallied with formations and tactics, Wales stuck to the Welsh way. It works.

They have a team spirit which is second to none at these Euros. It is what drags them through the tough times, like when they were battered by Belgium for the first 20 minutes and forced their way back through togetherness and resolve.

The words ‘Gorau Chwarae, Cyd Chwarae’ appear below the crest on the Welsh shirt. The phrase translates as ‘Best Play is Playing Together’.

A few of the bigger nations at the Euros could learn a lesson from that.

The Assistant Managers for Northern Ireland own an apartment next door to me and have been here this week, Steve Robinson and Jimmy Nicoll both said that they both thought ours really got to them and they both agreed we have a far superior one and is sung unbelievable and they also said for them to say that is something as they rate their fans up there with the best.

They must think their luck is right out finding a Welsh family living next door after elimination from the Euros ;) Had any complaints about singing the anthem in the bath Annis?

Being serious the English fans to their credit tried to lift the team against Iceland by singing GSTQ. However, it sounded so desperate and wouldn't inspire William Shakespeare never mind old Roy and his boys.

We are so lucky to have such an inspirational anthem and when we play France in the final the world's first (Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau) and second (La Marseillaise) best anthems will be played before kick off, followed by Europe's best team (Wales) beating Europe's second best team (France) to the The Henri Delaunay Trophy
