Invoke Article 50 Immediately Petition

Sat Jul 02, 2016 7:25 am

For all 'Leave' supporters there is a rapidly growing petition to put pressure on the government to invoke Article 50 & leave the EU straight away.

Unable to load the link but can be found via your search engine.

C'mon Wales!

Delay creates a lack of political stability on continental Europe which puts us in a strong negotiating position. Why the rush?

Its all getting interesting because some constitutional experts are saying it should be an act of parliament that invokes article 50 and not just a Prime Minister.

If it does not happen, there will be no point in ever holding another election in the UK. That would be the end of democracy as we know it, and we would be moving into dangerous territory if the will of the majority is ignored.

Sorry Steve your wrong here.An election is constitutional protected in law whereas a referendum is only advisory and does not bind any government to implement its outcome.

Yes, I agree with you, the result is not legally binding. I think it would be political suicide if the current ruling party were to go against this vote and not pass the relevant legislation to be able to withdraw from the EU, even if the majority of their MP's were not in favour of us leaving. I think that a lot of people would begin to wonder what the point of the referendum was if the majority were to be ignored. I honestly think that a lot of people would lose trust in our politicians and our democracy if the will of the majority was to be overturned. I suppose if a general election was to take place shortly, and a party was to win by pledging to overturn this referendum result, that would make thing interesting.

the correct approach, as it has been stated will happen, is to first have stability in parliament before considering at what point we will invoke article 50. to invoke article 50 now, with all the political turmoil at the moment would be suicide and lead to chaos.

I want us to be in the strongest possible position before invoking article 50, that includes a new prime minister. I want us to have everything prepared and ready in place before we negotiate our exit. Invoking article 50 now is an appalling idea and irresponsible.

We need the EU and Europe to cool off too, at the moment they are hostile to us for voting out. We need time to win them round and that will begin once we have a new PM. We are leaving the EU, there's nothing the left can do about it.

I agree with the bulk of your points but while the EU may be angry Europe isn't, hundreds of millions of normal Europeans are unhappy with the EU.

That's right. See this link:

https://ukconstitutionallaw.org/2016/06/27/nick-barber-tom-hickman-and-jeff-king-pulling-the-article-50-trigger-parliaments-indispensable-role/

It's a bit heavy going but it's very convincing. It'll need an Act of Parliament to invoke Article 50. I wouldn't bet on it getting through both houses on the strength of a non-binding referendum.

The referendum on Proportional Representation WAS binding because it was written into the Act that set up that referendum. The Act that set up the Brexit referendum did not have a similar clause ....

Invoking article 50 straight away would probably be a worse decision that voting out in the first place.

There are so many permutations and possible negotiations that it is going to take years to sort out.

Some people will be happy with free movement, some want no ties with the EU whatsoever, some would be happy to contribute to budget without free movement of people. So many options, and whatever the result there will be 'brexiters' unhappy with the result I'm sure.
