Quick EU Brexit related question

Sat Jun 25, 2016 10:17 am

Im asking because I don't know..

Has the central government made any commitments to keep funding the EU funded projects in Wales now the EU funding will stop?

I'm talking about WEFO, the infrastructure projects, the apprenticeship project, the common agriculture policy, the rural development programme (to 2020), farming connect, Horizon, Erasmus, Welsh innovation funding

As far as I know the funding is guaranteed until 2020 whether we stayed in or leave the EU

For some projects that's true.

However, listening to the EU bigwigs yesterday some of the funding to 2020 is now in jeopardy.

I understand the point that some people make is that it is our tax money handed back to us... however we will still be paying that money to the central government and I just wanted to find out if they had made the commitment to hand it back to us (through these or other programmes)?

Unusually some of the Welsh regions seemed to have voted for less funding in the future.

I can only assume other concerns far outweighed the potential loss of funding for projects.

True. If they actually sat and thought about it and considered the implications.

I'm just asking a very very pragmatic questions... will these projects be funded from central government? Surely everyone would have been asking the same question... what will happen to EU funded projects if we exit?

I am not convinced the money we will 'allegedly' save will be reinvested into Wales and will instead be used on other 'central' political priorities which may or may not benefit Wales.

In an ideal world they should still be funded.

Basic maths would show that the funding for projects we get from the EU would be part of the monies we would now NOT send to the EU. It's still there just in the government coffers as opposed to the the EU coffers.

I would hope the funding will be ring fenced but there may be Westminster MP's suggesting it goes elsewhere.

Funding what cycle paths ect ect Thats what some EU money used for? In reality the valleys didn't think EU money did anything for them as they voted out! Only time will tell what effect it has on Wales upto now it seems people made minds up that we shall be abandoned by London without informed knowledge . :old:

I got a question aswell, what happens with the Irish split, do they build a fence now to stop people coming from the republic upto northern ire, and if Scotland leaves uk, do we then have a sort of boarder control with them ?

Too early to answer just yet.

But it is possible there would be a double referendum in Ireland as per the anglo-Irish agmt of 1997.

The referendum in the south on a utd ireland would likely win
The referendum in the north would likely lose (loyalists still majority) , but the process for unification would have started and in a couple of decades there would likely be another vote.

Politically, if Scotland can remain in EU and also in the UK, this opens the door for N.Ire to do the same. This would be a bizarre situation but would give a way out for N.Ire to be borderless, and the whole Island of Ireland in the EU but as two separate countries as is the case now.

If Scotland and N.Ire remain in the EU and UK they would be attractive for inward investment....

Personally I think this is unlikely, but still a scenario.

Why would Scotland need to have boarder controls , surely they can let rooms out to whoever they want? Border controls might be a different matter to consider though.
