Vladimir Putin has questioned how just 200 Russians were able to beat up "several thousand" English football fans at Euro 2016.

Dozens of Russian fans were detained by French police after violence broke out between them and English supporters in Marseille.

The Russian President has described the hooligan behaviour as a "disgrace", but has questioned how it happened.

"The fighting between Russian fans with the English, that is a disgrace," he said at the country's annual economic forum in Saint Petersburg on Friday.

"But I truly don't understand how 200 of our fans could beat up several thousand English," he added to laughs and applause from the audience.



"In any case, the treatment by law enforcement should be the same for all violators."

"I hope that there are sober-minded people among them who really love sport and understand that any violation is not supporting their favourite team but damaging to the team and to sport."

On Thursday, a French court sentenced three Russian fans for up to two years in jail. The Russian foreign ministry says a further 20 people will be expelled on Saturday.



Russia has accused French authorities of trying to ignore the "provocative actions" of fans from other countries, including some who trampled on the Russian flag.

Russia has been handed a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 because of crowd disturbances at the game against England.

The dirty russians only attacked when they were outnumbering rival fans and even then had to use coshes and gas the cowards.
Highly trained in hitting handfuls of drunks, families and fans not wanting trouble

He should know as most of them were properly trained and armed with weapons, state sponsored and friends with the main dude. Probably special forces too.

My thoughts are this... The whole "Were England an Wales" united crap was just the plastics making up for the media.. We have never been united in football, I don't agree with violence but lets face it the Russians disappeared sharpish when the Welsh moved in!!

Investigators probing the 'orchestrated' violence in Marseille have released pictures of 20 England football fans suspected of being involved in the disorder.

Officers from the UK Football Policing Unit are hoping to identify the men following the clashes ahead of England's Euro 2016 game against Russia on Saturday June 11.

Police also appealed for people to hand over any photos or video of the fighting, which left 14 England football fans in hospital.

A group of 150 "hyper rapid, hyper violent" Russian hooligans attacked Three Lions supporters in the French port city, throwing chairs and beer bottles in violent scenes the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said were "on a scale we haven't seen for many years".

Two England fans are still in hospital with serious injuries, including Andrew Bache, 51, from Portsmouth and Stewart Gray, 47, from Leicester, who was found injured near the Rue Forte Notre Dame area at 4pm.

Police said Mr Gray, who recently opened his eyes after being in a coma, was wearing a blue t-shirt and was part of a group of fans who had gathered in the city centre at around 2.30pm. Officer have no footage to show how he came to be injured.

Detective Superintendent Andy Barnes, who is leading the UKFPU investigation, said: "Please come forward if you have any information, photos or video of what happened in Marseille.

My ticket was in the Russian end. I was in the far left corner at the back near the Spartak Moscow flag. I spent the match with a group of Spartak fans. They were great.They even said they had had a great experience in Marseilles just drinking with normal England fans in areas away from the trouble.

They said the Russian hooligans in Marseilles weren't normal supporters and came from the ranks of the army and police.
