BURTON Albion are interested in signing defender Ben Turner ahead of their first season in the Championship. The 28-year-old has been released by the Brewers' second-tier rivals Cardiff City, with talks understood to be at an early stage between Albion and the centre-half.
Turner, whose contract at the Cardiff City Stadium is due to expire on July 1, made 121 appearances for the Bluebirds over a five-year stint with the club after signing in August 2011. Having helped them earn promotion from the Championship, Turner's spell also included 33 outings during Cardiff's first-ever Premier League campaign.
The 6ft 4ins centre-back also scored a dramatic extra-time equaliser in the 2012 League Cup final against Liverpool, although the Reds went on to win the showpiece on penalties at Wembley. A report in the national media over the weekend linked Turner with Nigel Clough's Brewers, who are looking to bolster their defensive options following the departures of Shane Cansdell-Sherriff, Darius Charles and George Taft last month.
Experienced defender Cansdell-Sherriff was released by Albion following their promotion to English football's second tier, while Charles sealed a permanent move to AFC Wimbledon – with whom he earned promotion to League One through the play-offs last season – and Taft left for Mansfield Town.
The Brewers are not, though, understood to be interested in Sheffield United defender Kieron Freeman, who had been linked with the club and a possible reunion with former manager Clough, who was in charge of the right-back at Derby County and the Blades earlier in his career.
