Tears, devastation and pride... how Wales fans reacted to final minute sickener against England

16 JUN 2016

BY RORY BENSON

Wales' hearts were broken in the final minute of their Euro 2016 match-up against England when Daniel Sturridge slotted home the winner from close range.

Earlier Jamie Vardy had cancelled out Gareth Bale's 42nd minute free kick, setting up a tense final half an hour for the Welsh.

Wales fans were devastated but there was an air of optimism on social media, with many supporters believing their side can still make the knockout stages of the competition.

And with Chris Coleman's men facing a poor Russian side next, Wales' fate is very much in their hands.

Roy Hodgson admits he would feel sorry for Wales after last-gasp defeat - if he weren't England manager

Three Lions boss describes Sturridge injury-time winner as 'amazing' after seeing his team denied themselves by last-gasp Russia goal in first group game

England boss Roy Hodgson admits he would have had great sympathy for gallant Wales... if he were not Three Lions boss.

After Daniel Sturridge's winner deep into injury-time, Hodgson said: "It is amazing. We played so well against Russia and conceded in the 93rd minute and today we worked so hard in the second half and pushed and pushed and then scored in the 92nd minute.

"I suppose it shows things do even out but it is rare to see them even out in the space of two games.

"If I had not been with England, and watching Wales play some other opponent from afar, I would have felt very sorry for them.

"But they will have to excuse me not feeling sorry for them because I want to be pleased with ourselves.

"It was a dominant second-half display and it took a lot of good defending to keep us out. We go home happy, but Chris Coleman won't be disappointed with their performance."

Hodgson got out of jail with the half-time changes England fans and pundits were demanding, sending on Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.

Most people feel Vardy should have started England's two games after his title winning exploits for Leicester, but Hodgson stubbornly omitted him for the Russia game and again didn't start him against Wales.

However, his hand was forced by England's lacklustre first-half showing which drew widespread criticism as they trailed to a Gareth Bale goal.

On came Sturridge and Vardy for the completely ineffective Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane and they each scored to turn the game on its head.

Took time off work to watch proud of my country for giving it all against a good England team .
We got to deep in the second half just couldn't get out it was wave after wave.
I thought we had defended for our lives and got a point .
Gutted was not to be on the day so near but so far.
Well done to the Welsh team proud of all of them I think we will qualify though I think we can beat Russia.
Gutted through

It was such a shame to concede so late on. If we beat Russia and Slovakia beat England then we top the group!!

That guy crying when we were 1-0 up needs to get a f*cking grip. This isn't passion, it's a pathetic. Unless of course he just had a text message from his girlfriend in aberfuckknows informing him on the death of his goldfish.

there's no time for wallowing in self pity. we lost to a team that controlled the game virtually from start to finish. yes it was due to a late goal but bale conveyed the message that we need to move on quickly and focus on russia, which is the correct approach.

but the good news is that our key players are playing very well. russia didnt offer much against england but are a very experienced team that will not be easy to beat.

Seeing him on the big screen in the stadium gave us all a second wind, we really ramped up the noise in those last 10 minutes

Just couldn't avoid that massive disappointment at the end... As for your mate, fair play to him for turning his tears into defiance
