Fans threw chairs and set off smoke bombs ahead of tonight's game
They threw plastic bottles and chairs and set smoke off bombs in Lille city centre ahead of tonight's hotly awaited Group C clash.
German journalists reported hearing "right-wing slogans" and seeing fans waving the Reichskriegsflagge, a flag associated with the Nazis.
Vilker Goll, an official who represents German supporters, criticised bungling French police for only intervening "very late" on.
The violence came hours after Uefa threatened to kick England and Russia out of the tournament following clashes in Marseille.
Russian thugs in balaclavas charged at England supporters at full-time, forcing the fans to climb over stadium fences to safety.
The three days leading up to the game were also rocked by violence, with one Three Lions supporter suffering cardiac arrest.
The French government has announced an alcohol ban in "sensitive areas" around Euro 2016 matches in a bid to limit any further unrest.
The interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said: "Several prefects have already imposed restrictions on the sale, transportation, and consumption of alcohol."
He condemned the events in Marseille as unacceptable and said the police enforcement system which was in place had been "properly-sized".
