' SLADE INSTIGATED HIS MOVE '

Russell Slade says he "instigated" his departure from Cardiff City to become manager of Charlton.

Slade was moved to head of football in Cardiff in May and replaced as manager by Paul Trollope.

The former Grimsby Town and Brighton boss left the Bluebirds on 3 June after just 28 days in his new role and was named Charlton boss three days later.

"That was my decision, I instigated that," said Slade, who joined Cardiff from Leyton Orient in October 2014.

Slade continued, "I believe in my own ability. I've been at Leyton Orient more recently for four and a half years.

"[I had] a couple of seasons at Cardiff but it was a mutual decision for me to leave and come to Charlton."

Slade has agreed a three-year deal at The Valley and is the club's sixth manager since March 2014.

Charlton were relegated to League One after finishing third-from-bottom in the Championship in 2015-16 and nine points adrift of safety, ending a four year spell in the second tier.

"I thought it was a good opportunity," Slade added. "The club maybe has lost its way, certainly last season.

"But it's an opportunity for me to get this club back on its feet and going in the right direction."

Because it enabled him to save face rather than it be described as a straight forward sacking and also gave him income until the new job came along. It was always going to be a short term appointment but you can hardly blame him for not turning down the money as most people would in his position.

Of course it was.

Best of luck to him.

Left us in a better position than he found us. Didn't bring the success we had hoped, but was by no means a bad appointment under the circumstances.

I think it was quite respectful and admirable of Tan to give him that platform as a 'Thanks but no thanks' rather than an ungracious firing.

Slade stabilised a sinking ship. Can't fault him at all for that. :thumbright:

My only concern is why Trollope? If we were going to appoint him, we may as well stuck with Slade. Apparently many more players to leave and 4 new additions. I can only see Trollope cutting more wages, making some profit for the club and another mid-table Championship campaign.

I think it's a move to say Cardiff City are becoming a more progressive grass-roots club... The model has changed to a slow-build project. I don't think it means the best players will always leave, I just think it means there will be a bit more patience and focus put on younger players.

There are many ways a club can progress, let's hope this avenue works for us.

Personally, I would put the eggs in the basket of a top-quality head of football to give the entire club a direction.

Other teams have gained promotion with a small, tight-knit squad and I think we've all been moaning about (a) the number of young players not being given a chance, (b) the number of high earners not getting near the First Team, and (c) the wage bill itself

I think the moves made in recent times to 'cut our cloth accordingly' can only benefit the club in the medium to long term and if we choose the right man to work with a tweaked playing squad, then I think we can do better than last season

I'm not really sure he ever had/was given a fair chance by many supporters, but Russell Slade was not that man and it seems ver Tan realised that in the end. Hopefully, Paul Trollope is that man and on this occasion I think the fans might just give him a little breathing space to get things right  :ayatollah:

Even though it may seem pointless for moving him upstairs it actually made it look less embarrassing for him because I feel like he didn't deserve to be treated in that way.. at least this way makes it look better for both parties. :ayatollah:
