Is promotion next season a must.

Sun Jun 05, 2016 10:16 am

With the gap between the premier league and the championship getting bigger every year and the relegated teams getting 100million plus, is promotion a must next season before the premier league becomes a closed shop.

Looking at the teams in our league next season I think the top 6 clubs will come from this group, Newcastle, Derby, Brighton, Norwich, Villa and Ipswich outside chance for Wigan, Sheff Wed, Cardiff and Leeds.

Although they'll never admit it publicly the club know that there is no way we will be anywhere near promotion next season.

Their only true ambition is to stay in the Championship for as long as it takes to get the club in a position where it can be sold.

Until that time we'll be looking at continuing cutbacks, litle money available for transfers, cheap option managers from those within the club whilst Dalman and Choo are tasked with the job of trying to persuade the fans that in fact the club is serious about getting promoted.

I think we need to accept that Tan has lost interest in trying to win promotion and has effectively written the club off but he realises that his only chance of getting rid of it is to make it debt free.

Until that time he's made it clear that there will be no more investment and that's fair enough but reallistically we won't be challenging for promotion until we get a new owner with a different philosophy.

And that could take quite some time.

Good post. In recent ST renewals the club has indicated their burning ambition to get back to the Premier a League however this has not been backed up with the appointment of managers or activity in the transfer market. I believe that the last transfer fee paid was on 02.02.15 for Eoin Doyle. If the club had brought in a decent striker either last summer or in January then we would have probably made the play offs but the club seem intent on drastically cutting budgets at all costs. I agree that cuts had to be made but it seems to have gone from one extreme to another. I hope that I am proved wrong but unless the squad is strengthened particularly up front then it's going to be another mediocre season.

It has to be for Trollope in my opinion because he has to prove to the fans that he is not Slade mark 2

Well that's a load of rubbish. We paid about 500k for Idris Saadi just before deadline day August 31st 2015. Vincent Tan also bought Kenneth Zahore for an unknown fee 5 months ago for his other club as we were in a transfer embargo - with every intention for him to play for Cardiff -. What you're saying is, we haven't spent money SINCE we announced the Transfer Embargo?

Oh... Okay, I don't see your point especially saying the club aren't ambitious. They even bought Lex Immers for apparently 1.5m or so as soon as our embargo lifted...
Yet Doyle was our last purchase - alright

To be honest, that boat has sailed for the time being. Last season saw a fairly weak Championship by normal standards, so that was the big chance and it was missed.

Next season, the demoted clubs are huge and have parachute money to spend. The top of that table is going to be far more difficult to conquer in my opinion.

Another year of consolidation is the most positive way I can look at it.

Yes in my opinion as we are loosing our fans in their thousands and the longer we don't have success, the harder it is to get them back.

I believe we will get promoted season after next. Hopefully the powers in charge are looking to get the club in a stable position off the field and take things slowly and prepare properly which i think they are..
Hopefully Trollope will have a squad playing like something inbetween Jones and Malkys so we will have something to cheer about :ayatollah:

I don't think we will get remotely close to promotion for a long time. I think we will hold on to our Championship status, but even this may become difficult with the continued cost cutting.

Another mid-table Championship campaign. More cost cutting. Stabilisation is all the club wants at this moment in time.

Nothing wrong with that after the way the clubs been run over the last god knows how many years. I think lessons have been learned i think we all need to be patient for a few seasons

'a must' - what does that mean? does it mean the manager gets sacked if the target is not achieved? hiring a new manager every season would be counterproductive

the situation for most managers in the championship is if they fail to get promoted, they will need to point to evidence that the club is moving in the right direction, or get sacked. the stakes have never been bigger.

for a start, we don't even know what transfer budget the new man has been given. how can we assess whether promotion is a 'must' until we know information like that?

Definitely! It's a gradual process.
