Despite an eighth-place finish last season, you sense there will need to be a seismic improvement in Cardiff next term if they are to be challenging.

The factors which need to be addressed are pretty obvious, more consistency and a larger points haul on the road stand foremost, the need for more goals perhaps the key to an improvement on both those fronts.

The Bluebirds will think they have solved this by getting rid of Russell Slade, but in Trollope they have another manager taking his bow at this level.

Personnel-wise there is a big desire to offload what is seen as deadwood at the club with the wage bill, despite cutting, still regarded as unwieldy.

Bookmakers tip Cardiff City to make the play-offs next season

As for acquisitions, well, Lex Immers is in and might benefit from a good pre-season, another striker, perhaps to complement the Dutchman is an absolute essential.

Depending who leaves, if anyone, it is hard to see more than a couple of other players coming in.

Trollope will need to do what Slade failed to do in many people’s eyes, get the absolute maximum from what he has.

Can Cardiff bring in high quality support for Lex Immers?

With a third, fourth, fifth or sixth-place finish the least requirement demanded of Trollope, the Bluebirds are going to have a real scrap on their hands.

If the three relegated teams are fighting for the top two, whoever misses out is going to be hurting and dangerous.

Again the usual suspects will be queuing up as well, Derby again surely, Brighton once more if they can regroup, but there is more danger elsewhere as well.

Ipswich, under wily, old campaigner McCarthy finished just above the Bluebirds last season and Birmingham, under Gary Rowett, could have more stamina this time around.

Wolves and Leeds might just finally live up to their billing whilst you feel surely QPR under Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink will rouse themselves somewhat.

You can potentially throw Nottingham Forest, Reading and Blackburn into the equation with all three seeking new managers.

Within promoted Wigan, Burton and Barnsley you sense there is not the capability to spring a surprise, with Albion and their talisman Nigel Clough perhaps the romantic’s nod to a play-off push.

If Cardiff do finish sixth though, where bookies early odds have placed them, then, one thing is for certain, they will have earned it.

If we can earn more points than we did last season then it is continued progress and I'll be happy with that. If we can make the play-offs then even better. :bluescarf: :ayatollah:
