Cardiff City manager Paul Trollope set to quit Wales job as Chris Coleman says 'he can't do both'

Monday 23rd May 2016

Wales boss Chris Coleman has says Paul Trollope is likely to quit his role with Wales after Euro 2016

Wales boss Chris Coleman is expecting Paul Trollope to step down from his coaching role with the national side following his appointment as Cardiff City manager.

Trollope was named Head Coach by the Bluebirds last week and will take full charge of the Cardiff first team next season after Russell Slade was moved upstairs.

But he is also currently a coach with Wales too, and Coleman says it will be impossible for Trollope to try and guide the Bluebirds to Championship success and keep his job with Wales after Euro 2016.

Coleman’s views are at odds with those of the Cardiff hierarchy, who revealed when they appointed Trollope that not only would he continue with Wales at next month’s tournament, but he would also remain with the national side for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Coleman, who has signed a new two-year deal with Wales to guide them through that World Cup qualification campaign, said he thought that was extremely unlikely.

And he revealed Trollope, and Wales’ other back room staff, were not actually on contracts, but paid by a game-by-game basis, meaning Trollope can depart whenever he is ready.

“Let’s be honest, we are going to lose Paul Trollope,” said Coleman.

“He is coming to France, he’s not said anything yet, but he can’t manage Cardiff and be with us. I would not expect him to. He’s got a tough job there now. It would be no surprise to me if there is a knock on the door.

“He’s very good, we want him in France. But it’s a fantastic opportunity for him at Cardiff City, he’s a great coach, so it is unfortunate we are going to lose him.”

The departure of Trollope means it looks likely Coleman will bring Kit Symons back into his coaching staff. Symons is now available after being sacked as Fulham boss back in November.

It's a shame for him, but it's the most sensible outcome really. Maybe the FAW will be able to persuade Giggs to take over from him part-time of he leaves Man Utd now they're getting a new manager.

But I think Trollope knows deep down, even though he'll want to do both, that he can only really do one or the other.

Ned, how some on here thought Trollope could do both jobs shocked me.

Annis, a lot different to just being a part of the coaching staff at club and intentional to being a coach at international and the head coach at club. It's very difficult to do both and fans would start asking the question what he's more focused on - both Wales and Cardiff City fans.

I'd ask the question whether people would support him doing both if he was a coach at England or Scotland instead of Wales?

Like you say, common sense prevails :ayatollah:

Sensible decision and the right one, too!

I'm still a little concerned about a conflict of interests until Wales Euro 16 adventure is over, but hopefully Paul Trollope will have told the club what he needs to have in place for his return and a fresh start for everyone in readiness for next season! :ayatollah:

That does worry me as well Chris, but thankfully Trollope will then be able to get on with the City job.
Trollope at least already has 90% of our players for next season :ayatollah:
