Cardiff City are trying to line up a return to the club for former manager Lennie Lawrence.

New head coach Paul Trollope has worked closely with the vastly experienced Lawrence previously and is understood to be keen to appoint him to his backroom staff.

Trollope, 43, has succeeded Russell Slade as first-team boss.

Lawrence was Cardiff manager between 2002 and 2005, leading the Bluebirds to promotion to the Championship in 2003.

The club's transfer committee has yet to clear the appointment of Lawrence, who is one of a select few who has managed for more than 1,000 games.

Lawrence, 68, was director of football at Bristol Rovers where Trollope was coach as the duo steered the club to promotion from League Two in 2008.

Recently, Lawrence, who managed Plymouth, Charlton, Middlesbrough, Grimsby, Bradford and Luton has been assistant to Dougie Freedman at Crystal Palace, Bolton and Nottingham Forest.

Ridiculous.

Can't Trollope cope without his dad holding his hand?

Perhaps that's what Dalman meant when he said appointing Trollope may not be cheap.

They're going to have to top up Lennie's pension each month.

Why is it ridiculous? He needs an assistant manager and is bringing in a very experienced right-hand man. I think its ridiculous people are condemning PT already, he wouldn't have been my first choice but give the guy a chance. Seems like some people wanna right him off before his first game.

Agree if it makes Trollope better at his job and having a knowledable old head beside him even he does hold his hand its results on a matchday that matter

Yep, can't see the issue with Lennie Lawrence coming in some capacity. Did well for us previously (one of my best days as a City supporter when he took us to promotion via the 2003 Play-offs versus QPR at the Millennium stadium! :notworthy: ) and is obviously respected by Paul Trollope

Let him bring in who he wants (and Vincent Tan will allow) and let them get on with it. All will be judged solely on style and results :ayatollah:

Why does he need a right hand man?

Can't he make decisions himself?

Love Lennie but he's a dinosaur in footballing terms now. His wise and sage advice weren't a great help to Dougie Freeman were they?

Stand on your own two feet and make your own decisions.

I'm saying if he was any good he wouldn't need one.

Trollope and Lawrence - a good bet for promotion?

If we were in League 1 perhaps.

Hang on a minute, how did that work out for them last time they were together in League 1?

The Bristol Rovers fans said that Trollope was ok when Lennie was with him but useless on his own. So really we're not appointing Trollope as the new manager, we're appointing him and Lennie Lawrence.

Great. I suppose Alan Cork is on standby just in case?

I suppose Alex Ferguson never needed Brian Kidd as his assistant for all those years either as he's good enough on his own?
