Returning as number 2 to trollope

Former Cardiff City boss Lennie Lawrence could return to Bluebirds to aid new boss Paul Trollope

Lennie declines to comment on prospect of him linking up with old Bristol Rovers partner Trollope once more and returning to club he took into Championship

Paul Trollope and Lennie Lawrence, could be reunited

Cardiff City could bring former manager Lennie Lawrence back to the club to work with new Head Coach Paul Trollope.

We understand Lawrence has been approached about a potential new role, although the exact nature of his involvement is not yet clear. A football consultancy position looks likely.

It would mean a return to the club Lawrence himself bossed between 2002 and 2005 during the Sam Hammam era.

During his time as Bluebirds manager, Lawrence took charge of 174 games and his biggest achievement was taking Cardiff into the Championship after beating QPR in the play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in 2003.

Trollope and Lawrence worked together previously at Bristol Rovers. After departing the Bluebirds in 2005, Lawrence became Director of Football at Rovers where Trollope was to become first-team coach.

The pair worked as a two-tier managerial team and enjoyed success at the west country club, earning promotion to League One with Rovers in their first full season in charge.

Lawrence eventually left Rovers in May 2010 and Trollope departed just a few months after.

Trollope was this week named as new Head Coach at Cardiff, taking charge of first team affairs from Russell Slade, who was moved upstairs to become Head of Football.

It is understood Slade will have no input into first team matters next term and it appears the Bluebirds will turn to Lawrence to renew his partnership with Trollope and help guide the 43-year-old when it comes to matters on the pitch.

Lawrence recently left his post as assistant at Nottingham Forest and the 68-year-old’s next port of call in the football world is looking increasingly likely to be former club Cardiff.

Since his time with Cardiff, Lawrence has worked as a consultant at Carshalton Athletic and as a technical director at Hereford United

In 2011 he became assistant to then-manager Dougie Freedman at Crystal Palace.

When contacted by WalesOnline, Lawrence declined to comment on the possibility of him returning to the Bluebirds.

What makes you think Bellamy would want to be no2?

To gain experience before stepping up to be a manager perhaps?

I can't see that happening can you?
If he came in it would have been as manager.

I would be happy with this.

They clearly get on well and every head coach/manager should have the people THEY want, not the club.

Then he can have no excuses :thumbright:

Then what would be the point of Russell Slade, if there currently is one, of course? ;) :?

Slade isn't anything to do with 1st team

Wez, Slade has been kept on as a 'football advisor' for Tan with the only stated stipulation being that "Paul Trollope doesn't answer to him directly"

That's why I ask IF RS really has a role?

To me, the title alone means he will be having an 'advising' and 'watching' brief, which adds up to him being Tan's football man on the ground. IF Lennie comes back (and I thought he was good for us) I think he makes RS even more remote from the First Team and even less worthwhile

Of course, when his (RS) brief is really known, it may well surprise us positively ;)

TBH, I don't see RS staying too long before a "too good opportunity" comes along for him and he goes out of the CCS with his head held high!

Love Lennie but he's about 90 now! I know I'd been saying that I'd prefer an experienced manager but appointing LL as an assistant would be a step too far.

Last seen helping that wazzock Freeman continue his career downward spiral at Forest.

Hardly a ringing endorsement!

I hope this doesn't happen I will always be thankful to Lennie for getting us up in the play offs, but time has moved on.

I think he's 68. The same age as Warnock who most people on here seemed to want as no.1

I've read part of his role is scouting - god forbid!

Most good managers have a good no2, and by all accounts these two worked well together at rovers and slump appeared when lenny left! So would be smart move :old:

Thing is if Bellamy came in as no.2 as soon as we hit a poor run fans would be clamouring for Trollope to be sacked and Bellers to be given the reins...

I think it is fair to say, most of us had our hopes set on a different #1 than Trollope. For me, I had wished for a Warnock with Bellers #2, with a view to handing over the ropes in 2 years......I now think that Trollope with his Welse squad connections and LL with his vast knowledge of the league, players and tactics could turn out to be a perfect fit. I'm really excited by this rumour, hope it pans out
