PAUL TROLLOPE "I'LL BE MY OWN MAN"

Thursday 19th May 2016

BY CHRIS WATHAN

Football correspondent Chris Wathan sat down with the new Bluebirds boss to hear his plans for the future

Cardiff City ended their hunt for a new man by sticking with what they’ve got in Paul Trollope.

CW: Congratulations Paul. You’re now the man in charge...

PT: Thank you, I’m very pleased and honoured to have this opportunity. Since I’ve been in the management game I’ve wanted to be in that position, to get back in that position if you like. It’s a good challenge and one I’m looking forward to getting started with. I didn’t have any reservations, not at all, it’s a good club and a good fan base, nice stadium and facilities - and it was an absolute no-brainer.

CW: It can be seen as the start of a new era, but with Russell Slade head of football and now you being confirmed it’s the same faces?

PT: I think there has to be an element of continuity but I have my own personal ideas, philosophies and expectations of how I want the team to play, how I want the players to conduct themselves and I will bring my own stamp to move the club forward.

Hopefully I can show what I can do. Russell was the manager and we all worked hard together in his staff. We were a close-knit backroom staff who worked hard to achieve the stability the club has now.

We are quite sure with the right tweak in the staff to reshuffle and bring some different attributes will enhance it. I am looking to bring some staff in, that is an ongoing thing but something I will look to add. Something different to how it has been structured but it can improve it.

CW: Can you talk us through the process? Have discussions been going on very long?

PT: Discussions have been ongoing for a few days. I am a football man, I am passionate about the game and this role I understand does not come round every year so I am delighted to accept it.

Of course, there were discussions, but it has not been going on for a long time. It was a fresh discussion and I was pleased to reach an agreement. I have always been ambitious in my career and I had to work my way up from when I was a player. I was YTS at Swindon and I grafted to achieve what I did and I will bring that work ethic and drive to this role and this club and the players. I know the fans need to see that.

CW: But you would have seen the struggles Russell faced in getting the fans support from the start. Perhaps there were some looking for a big-name appointment - where can you improve on where Russell perhaps failed in that regard?

PT: I am not going to compare myself to Russell, I worked in his staff for 15-16 months and I worked very hard in that staff and was dedicated and committed to the club in that role.

This is a different role and moving forward I would like to think that my work with the players has shown there is progress to be made. There are questions with regard to a bigger name, but all you can ask coming into a job is to be given the time and patience to show what you can produce.

The perception on the way out of a job is more important than the perception on the way out. Hopefully we can prove there is potential within the club. The fans have their views as at any club, but I really see a unity here and it being a major aspect of us moving forward.

CW: Have you spoken to Vincent Tan?
PT: I have spoken to the owner on a number of occasions. They have been positive talks and I look forward to building a positive working relationship with him.

CW: Did you ask him if there is money to spend?
PT: It is probably a question for others to answer in detail but we have a strong squad and a decent budget. There will be wheeling and dealing to be done like everyone else. There will be players to move out, players to bring in and books to be balanced.

We are out from under the embargo which is a real positive and means we can move forward with things. We have to be wise in recruitment, we know where we are and the process needs to be thorough. We need to do good due diligence to ensure the people we bring in fit in the group and have the quality to move us forward.

CW: Have you been set any targets?

PT: It’s progress - and progress means play-offs, and hopefully promotion. If we make a good start and we’re in the mix then promotion has got to be the aim. We have to be ambitious.

We have to create a positivity and a real belief within the club. Not just down the training ground, the staff and the players, but we need that real belief throughout the club. If we can do that and taking that step - and it is a big step - with that unity and wise recruitment, that’s what we will be looking to take.

CW: Do you know where you’d like to strengthen to try and achieve that?

PT: It’s a very fluid time of year with people going out and people coming in. It is early stages with season not long finished but certainly looking to add quality and profile the right player. You need wise recruitment, not only get the quality but the right physical attributes and the psychological attributes. Good knowledge of existing players and hopefully I’ll know what’s required in the group to move forward.

CW: What can Cardiff fans expect from you? What does a Paul Trollope team look like?

PT: I’m not going to go into huge tactical details but I want to play progressive football with a high intensity and high energy, always with tactical discipline. Everyone wants to be on the front foot and attack, as will we, but there is a balance to be struck.

The teams at the top score the most goals but also concede the least. It is about finding the right balance, I have had a lot of good exposure to high level football as a coach with Wales at international level, Norwich in the Premier League and Birmingham in the Championship. It has opened my mind up to a lot of good things and I hope that stands me in good stead.

In the short term we need to find a way to win, that is important. There is always an element of building for the long term future, that is my philosophy. But we also need to identify strengths and weaknesses within the group of players we have.

Everyone has ideals but you need a pragmatic approach to win games, that is what the top teams have done in this division this season and why they have been promoted. They have looked at what they have at their disposal and used them in the right way in terms of formations and flexibility. There is no right and wrong but you have to be intelligent enough to identify how best it is to win.

I like him more than Slade already. I hope Trollope is not as arrogant and delusional as Slade was.

A lot of common sense in there and (as I stated elsewhere) I liked what he said in his early interviews after his appointment was announced

Maybe not the first choice of most people (including me, as my betting slip will show! LOL :laughing6: ) but early impressions are good and he (like all incumbents) deserves (a) the respect of the club's loyal fans, and (b) the opportunity to shape his own squad in readiness for our attack on The Championship next season!

Good luck, Paul Trollope! :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluebird:

When i watched the wales / northern Ireland game a few months ago, they played a high pressing game. The opposition had no time at all on the ball before one of the welsh players came in with a tackle. It was fresh and enjoyable to watch in comparison with the style cardiff played last season, we allowed the opposition too much time on the ball and time to think. I hope that is one element that Trollope changes next season.

Not my first choice but he already knows the players so thats an head start when it comes to keeping or getting rid of them.
He talks well and will be wanting to succeed and prove himself and hopefully he will shock all of us and be a very good manager :ayatollah:
All i want him to do is introduce good attacking football which we havent seen since Dave Jones was here with an added bit of flair to the game.

Sounds simple I know, but if he is an improvement from Slade, then we make the play offs ..

I like the bit he says about his philosophy he strikes me as a manager who will wants us to play attractive possession football and he has learned training methods from the Spain team exciting times ahead. :ayatollah:

Words are easy, I remember Ole saying the same type of things. Time will tell of course.
However, I'll be looking forward to see who comes in and goes out and I'll be supporting the manager/coach and the team next season. Hope he does well and he's got to be an improvement on Slade and his football who I couldn't stand.

Every manager and club officials always say the right things when a new person is appointed, they are hardly going to say anything else are they? I hope he does well for us, and at the moment I am in the same position as everyone else, I have no idea if he'll be a storming success or a complete failure. I noticed someone saying if he's better than Slade that will guarantee a play off place. He can be 10 times better than Slade but that won't guarantee anything if the best players are sold and replaced with inferior ones. Will be interesting to see who leaves and who arrives over the next few months.

Of course they do, you're stating the obvious that's why I said - words are easy let's wait and see.

Exactly, I was agreeing with your post.
