Will Slade's gamble pay off at Cardiff City?

"I have always been impressed with Russell Slade's footballing sides as he has never had a great deal of money to spend at Leyton Orient and yet he always put out an 11 that would cause problems for others in Division One. However, he has decided to leave the apparent comfort of the Matchroom surroundings, shown above, for a very different club with a massive following and very high expectations.

Is he a good football man? - Yes. Is he a winner? Perhaps that is more questionable, having taken the 'O's to within a hair's breath of the Championship only to lose out on a penalty shoot out at Wembley last May against Rotherham Utd. Yet, what should a manager do when he is given a chance to manage a former Premier League team with a powerful owner like Vincent Tan?

You either jump full in and take the job or back away very discretely and consider how ambitious you really are. Slade chose the former option. Some will say it was brave, while others may think it fool hardy. We will know further down the line, but already opinions are very divided over the Cardiff owner and his disregard of the Blues' traditional shirt colour, transfer budgets and his dealings with Malky MacKay, who has also had his reputation discussed in the press.

Now Mr Tan has suggested that Slade could emulate Arsene Wenger's tenure by serving as long at Cardiff as the Frenchman has been at the at Arsenal. Talk about putting pressure on your new manager! That has not gone down to well with some opinions in the game.

How will Russell Slade tackle his new found position at Cardiff City and is he a big enough name for the Welsh club? Well, Russell was the manager at Leyton Orient for the past four years and he had been the fourth longest serving manager in the league at a club, before his move to Cardiff. That says to me that he is not one to rock the boat, but has a stable influence and that might be perfect for the turbulent recent times of Cardiff City. If he can get on with Vincent Tan and inspire the undoubted talent that is already at Cardiff City, it is more than likely that the fans will soon get behind him, once they get to know his football philosophy and see his calming presence.

In such circumstances, you might say it is not such a big gamble for Slade to take the trip down the M4, and I suspect that Cardiff might well rapidly start to climb from the Championship table. However, Slade's job might be more seen by fans as a man who was chosen to bring in unity and stability at the club, rather than his potential to be a winner in the Championship. For sure Cardiff needs unity from top to bottom and while that is going to be a difficult task, Slade of course needs the fans on his side. If indeed he gets off to a flying start at home against Nottingham Forest on 18 October, Slade's task will instantly become a lot easier."

A good read

Sums it up completely when Russell came

And is Still valid in hind-site

There are jobs out there for him, relegation is an expense clubs can do without, Slade is proven in being able to keep a club afloat
