Portsmouth 2 Plymouth 2:

Bosses see red as spoils shared in feisty League 2 play-off first leg

Pompey scramble draw after Jamille Matt’s double for Pilgrims

GARY ROBERTS lashed home a second half penalty to earn Portsmouth a draw in their League Two play-off first leg clash against Plymouth

Pompey took the lead just three minutes when Marc McNulty was gifted too much time and space and was able to drive his low shot home from 20-yards.

But Plymouth hit back at the double through Jamille Matt to stun the home crowd - first outjumping rookie keeper Ryan Allsop, then with a brilliant overhead kick on 19 minutes to put the visitors in front.

Pompey poured forward searching for an equaliser as Plymouth sat back content to defend their lead - and the Blues were rewarded with an equaliser six minutes after the break through Roberts’ spot-kick after McNulty had been sent tumbling.

Plymouth were fortunate to finish the game with ten men after Matt escaped punishment for an apparent a headbutt and Peter Hartley was the last man when he hauled down McNulty for the spot-kick.

But Pompey boss Paul Cook and Plymouth’s assistant Paul Wooten were both sent to the stands after clashing in the wake of Matt’s apparent butt on Michael Doyle.

WENGER ON CONTRACT

Arsene Wenger has been speaking to the press ahead of Arsenal's final match of the season, and has rubbished speculation he's been offered a new two-year contract.

A report in The Times this morning claimed the Gunners were keen for the Frenchman to sign a fresh deal to remain at the club, despite a turbulent 2015-16 season.

But Wenger said: “That's completely wrong and I don't know where this information comes from.

“You can treat that as just an invention - one more. It’s absolutely false, and I would like the press to check before they give information out."

United have a good relationship with Sporting from previous deals for Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, but the Portuguese club reportedly want upwards of £45m for Mario.

TALKS FOR BENITEZ

Rafa Benitez met Newcastle United managing director Lee Charnley on Thursday for initial talks over the Spaniard's future, according to Sky sources.

We also understand Benitez is seeking assurances from the club hierarchy, including having full control of transfers.

It is thought the three-year contract Benitez signed in March included a release clause should he not manage to preserve the club's top-flight status - but Newcastle Fans' Forum, a supporters' group, plus the Newcastle Chronicle have called on the Spaniard to stay on.
