NEW LAWS FOR FOOTBALL

By Lyall Thomas

10/05/16

Accidental fouls inside the box will not be an automatic sending-off

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has published changes to the laws of the game for the 2016/17 season, the most notable altering sending-off and cautionable offences inside the penalty area.

The previous 'triple-punishment' rule meant that a player who denied a goal-scoring opportunity was automatically red-carded and handed a suspension, as well as giving away a penalty.

However, the law has now changed so that players committing accidental fouls, that deny a goal-scoring opportunity, are not automatically sent off, but cautioned instead.

So if a player is through on goal. Rounds the keeper who brings the player down. The keeper is no longer sent off as well as own. It says accidental but I would guess now a keeper would deliberately bring down the player to try and save the pen?

Basically yes lots goalkeepers dive at ball but bring down player that is accidental, but if barge into player that's diliberate! but it's really giving referee option of not sending player off and using his own judgement as to accident or not instead of red card regardless of situation .

Open to interpretation, but the change allows for keepers making a 'genuine' attempt to stop a goal. The referees will receive guidance and still send keepers/players off for the more 'professional' fouls inside the box
