Clements sacking

Mon May 09, 2016 10:20 pm

At derby he had them 5th in the league and only 5 points off leaders hull. Harsh sacking imo. Ok he could have kept them dropping down the table but given more time who knows derby could have won the league we will never know.

1 thing he does has is experience and knowledge of the game and obvious massive potential.

Would tan give him money to spend?
Would he come to us?
Would he be a good manager for cardiff and worth the gamble?

Opinions?

Yes I would have he has a proper football brain coached the very best and would be a great long term manager for us. :thumbright: :ayatollah:

Reason he was sacked wasn't because of the league position, they said at the time. It was because apparently his view was too short-term. Their board are focusing on a long-term project, and they were concerned that he was too intent on getting promoted this season. A few quotes from their owner at the time:

"Promotion was not the primary target this season"

"The priorities were building on the Derby way and style of football enjoyed in the past two seasons, adding depth and strength to our playing squad"

"Sadly, on these measurements, we have not made enough progress and that is why we have decided to part company with Paul. I firmly believe that we have one of the very best first-team squads in this league. Our players are highly talented professionals who are more than capable of winning games at this level and beyond"

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "A tough ask for a manager to get several new signings playing really fluid and free-flowing football in the space of six months. It is win first and build a style of football second. In this case, I think there were good signs. It is not like they are struggling in mid-table wondering where they are going"

And BBC pundit Steve Claridge: "If you are a Derby fan, what would you think when your club is coming out and say our primary concern is not getting promoted this season? What are we doing then? It feels like a contradiction"

I'd love clement to come but the thing is, working out chealsea, psg and real Madrid you can bet derby were paying him an absolute fortune with what they've forked out lately. If there were talks they've prob broke down over pay.

if hes good enough to coach chelsea psg and real madrid i think he has more than enough experience to coach us, the only other manager id go for is pearson but he doesnt look likely tbh

Clement spent at least 25 million at Derby last season and drastically failed, yet you're all saying you would like him to come to us where he will have very little money to spend, are you all serious?

I question Clement's man management skills and believe his sacking was largely because he cancelled a mid season break to Dubai because Derby "only" drew at home. Derby failed to win a single game from that point onwards until he got sacked. It looked obvious to me that the players got him out. Derby were in free fall and if they kept Clement the whole season, I believe Derby would have continued to plummet down the league.

Clement also spent ridiculous sums of money in January when they were doing fine, which upset the apple cart and contributed to Derby's bad run of results and Clement's sacking. Players like Johnny Russell got dropped because Clement recklessly spent 6 million on Nick Blackman and 2 million on another winger, Camara.

Clement also struggled at the start with Derby and it was only when he was given 6 million to sign Bradley Johnson, he managed to turn their form around. Clement was massively backed financially and failed. In comparison, Russell Slade kept us challenging Derby for the playoffs without spending a single penny this season.

I think Clement would be a disastrous appointment and I can't believe you're all hoping we appoint him. Clement is another Brian Kidd, a very good coach, but a failed manager.

After that assesment i can see why you have that opinion on clement.
But...

1.blackman was on fire when he signed him so cant blame him there.

2.i couldnt blame any manager for cancelling a mid season break to dubai really, get the team to knuckle down in the uk no need for a jolly off to sun it up a broad in the middle of the season imo.

3.yes maybe he was a bit reckless in the transfer market and maybe hes learned from that and be fair he aint gonna get that spending power here but maybe he would do better spotting players that fits into his team and philosophy working on a smaller budget instead of being thrown a load of cash in his first ever managerial job.

Um....I thought the club made it clear we're looking for a Head Coach and not manager. He is a top coach.
