Middlesbrough owes £1.5million to West Ham after promotion to Premier League

MAY 9, 2016 NEWS, WEST HAM

West Ham will receive an extra £1.5million following Middlesbrough’s promotion to the Premier League.

The money is due as part of Stewart Downing’s transfer at the start of the season.

Downing joined Middlesbrough for £5.5m in a surprise deal last August with an extra £1.5m agreed on condition of Middlesbrough’s promotion to the Premier League.

West Ham are due an extra £1.5million from Middlesbrough thanks to a clause in the transfer of Stewart Downing to the Riverside Stadium in August

Downing wanted to return to the North East and has made 40 appearances and scored three goals during their promotion season which was confirmed following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with rivals Brighton.

Downing said: ‘Middlesbrough never make it easy, but it’s incredible.

‘The chairman was one of the big reasons why I came back here and he deserves it more than anyone.’

The Hammers will now be entitled to the extra payment, which comes on top of the £5.5million spent by Boro on Downing initially
