Four have been arrested at the Gillingham Millwall match
Police have arrested four people at the Gillingham Millwall match this afternoon (May 8).
Both Millwall and Gillingham fans flocked to the Priestfield Stadium on Redfern Avenue this afternoon to watch the last game of the season.
The stakes were high for Gillingham, as a win could have won them a place in the playoffs.
Millwall fans occupied sections of the home ends, where scuffles broke out during the game.
Instead, Millwall scored a penalty in the 98th minute to win 2-1 over the home side.
And the tension soon bubbled over, with many reporting incidents of fighting both on the pitch and in the Rainham stand.
Police have arrested a total of four people in connection with the match. Two were arrested for going on to the playing areas, one was arrested for being drunk and disorderly, while another was arrested for assaulting a police officer.
A police helicopter is also thought to be observing fans as they leave the stadium.
The arrests follow a warning from Kent Police to residents in Gillingham informing them to expect town to be a lot busier on match day.
It is not yet clear which teams the arrested fans support.
The arrests follow criticism of club organisers on social media from fans who wanted Millwall supporters to be banned from the home stand.
Millwall followers have a reputation for getting into scuffles with opposition fans, and sometimes even among themselves.
Their club motto is ''we fear no foe wherever we go'' and fans have adopted the chant: ''nobody likes us, and we don't care.''
