The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week the LG Performance of the Week Award should go to Sheffield Wednesday after they secured 6th place with a 3-0 victory against Cardiff City, in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday 30th April 2016.
The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,000 competitive matches in professional football.
Sheffield Wednesday’s manager, Carlos Carvalhal, will receive a specially commissioned trophy made by world renowned silversmiths and LMA Partner, Thomas Lyte of London, in a presentation to commemorate the award.
With Cardiff City pushing for the final play-off spot in the Championship, Carvalhal went into the game knowing that a point would end Cardiff’s hopes but a loss would throw it wide open with one game to go.
As the game entered the final 30 minutes, with the scores level, Gary Hooper gave Wednesday the lead to calm the nerves before an own goal put the game out of Cardiff’s reach. Hooper added a second goal late in second half injury time to reinforce Wednesday’s promotion credentials beating a very good Cardiff side convincingly.
Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal told BBC Sport: "I said from the beginning that we were outsiders this season.
"We achieved this place because we have a fantastic group of players, they're acting like a team, we are one as a team.
"We feel strong at the moment, like at the beginning of the season. We saw that today. We saw the reaction when we lost the ball - we were like dogs.
"Getting to the play-offs is the work of a lot of people; the players, the chairman and the fans who turn out home and away."
