Millwall are to face an investigation from the FA amid claims a fan struck Oldham defender Anthony Gerrard during the weekends game at the Den, BBC Sport has confirmed.

Gerrard took to Twitter to vent his dismay at the incident, which allegedly occurred when Millwall fans took the whistle following the final whistle.

The defender added that his “five year old hits harder” and that a Millwall fan gave him “a dig”.

It is not the first time the Lions have been in hot water, and is something which will come as an unwanted distraction as the club looks to secure promotion back to the Championship via the play-offs.

Neil Harris’s men have been excellent all season, and will see the end of season shoot out as the perfect way to round of a brilliant season which has seen Lee Gregory hit form in front of goal.

The Lions beat Oldham 3-0 in the fixture to secure their play off spot, and the unwanted attention from the aftermath of the game is something the club will be keen to put to bed as early as possible.
