TEN Cardiff City players currently out on loan: Do any of them have a future?

Thursday 5th May 2016

BY PHIL SMITH

The likes of Kenwyne Jones and Etien Velijonka will almost certainly see their expensive Cardiff careers come to an end, but will there be room for Tom Adeyemi and other youngsters?

Even despite the efforts to trim the number of players on their books, the Bluebirds' still find themselves with 10 players who have been shipped out on temporary deals.

With all those agreements expiring in the summer, we took a look at whether any have a Cardiff future.

And for those that don't, what chance do the club having of moving them on, and for what kind of financial reward?

Kenwyne Jones :ayatollah:

Life in the Abu Dhabi sun has been good to Kenwyne, who has scored a handful of goals and even gone up against the legendary Xavi in the AFC Champions League.

That said, it remains to be seen whether a long-term contract will be offered when his loan deal expires at the end of the season.

Is there any chance at all of returning?

It seems unlikely. The Bluebirds' would not be prepared to offer him anywhere near the reported £50,000 per week he is currently earning in the Gulf.

There was a definite sense of finality to his January move, his departure a statement from a club showing it was determined to now live within it's means.

He still has the talent to make an impact in the Championship, but now 31, expect him to see out his career abroad.

Federico Macheda :ayatollah:

His loan move to Nottingham Forest has not been the fresh start he was hoping for.

Three appearances without a goal was a disappointing start, and he has not been seen in competitive action since his side were beaten 3-0 at home to Brentford right at the start of April.

The return of Britt Assombalonga from a long-term injury has meant a place on the bench has not even been secure over the last month.

He will never be the player that some thought he could become after that explosive start at Manchester United, but it is saddening that it increasingly looks his Championship career could be over too.

The only way you could see him still at Cardiff when the next season kicks off is if the Bluebirds' are unable to find another buyer.

It might well be that a return to his native Italy offers the best chance of footballing redemption.

Filip Kiss :ayatollah:

He has played just 31 minutes of League Football since signing on a permanent deal in 2010, and it looks the Slovakian will end his Cardiff career with that unflattering statistic untouched.

Currently on loan at Norweigan side FK Haugesund, Kiss is coached by former Bluebirds' assistant manager Mark Dempsey, who has publicly outlined his determination to sign him on permanent terms.

Cardiff ready to see Kiss go
His Cardiff contract expires in the summer.

Kiss was initially an impressive figure as a loanee under Malky Mackay, but it looks like one of City's strangest stories is about to come to an end.

Eoin Doyle :ayatollah:

His Cardiff career looked as good as over when he left for Preston in September, but Doyle is still under contract until 2018.

Whether the Deepdale outfit would be willing to invest in a permanent deal remains to be seen, with four goals in 30 appearances a relatively underwhelming return.

It has been an impressive season for Simon Grayson's men, and they might target a better goal return up front as a key requirement for a play-off push next year.

There would likely be lower league suitors for Doyle, whose record for Chesterfield raised eyebrows throughout the footballing league pyramid.

As has so often been the case, Cardiff would likely have to face a loss on their reported £1 million signing.

It is unlikely that he is being considered for any significant first team role with the Bluebirds' next season.

His days as one the most feared and revered strikers in the division look to be gone now.

The season long loan to Wolves has been a major disappointment. Scoring just three goals in 29 appearances, he has failed to ignite a play-off push for his team.

As such, they will almost definitely look elsewhere to try and replace Benik Afobe this summer.

Adam Le Fondre :ayatollah:

Le Fondre himself does not expect his return to Wales to be a lengthy one, saying in February: "It looks like I will have to go back down the Cardiff in the summer and reassess where I am in the summer,

"I've had a frustrating season. I'm very much on the periphery of things at the moment."

He would love a Reading return, and Cardiff are highly unlikely to stand in his way if a good offer comes in.

Unfortunately, he would no longer command a significant fee.

Tom Adeyemi :ayatollah:

An impressive first half of the season had Cardiff fans scratching their heads as to why the young midfielder had been allowed to join rivals Leeds United.

Since then, however, much has changed.

Stuart O'Keefe has returned to the first team fold and delivered a string of excellent performances, while Adeyemi has fallen out favour with the famously combustible Steve Evans.

Indeed, he has only featured in one senior game since the 23 of February.

Tom Adeyemi and Bournemouth's Adam Smith compete for the ball in Capital One Cup action last season
So could he return and have a Bluebirds' future?

At 24, he has still his best years ahead of him, but will also be acutely aware that he is running out of chances to convince he is up to regularly playing at this level.

Still, of all the players currently out on loan, he would seem the most likely to play a part in the 2016/17 campaign.

With just a year left on his deal, it is almost now or never time.

Having played for almost all of the England age group sides, Lewis looked destined to fight with Joe Hart to be his generation's England No.1.

It hasn't worked out that way, and he will almost certainly leave Cardiff when his contract expires in the summer.

Has not made much of an impression at current side Fulham, making just nine appearances behind Andy Lonergan and Marcus Bettinelli in the pecking order.

Etien Velikonja :ayatollah:

Has enjoyed a brilliant season on loan at Lierse SK, scoring 23 goals in 28 games.

Whether that says more about the Slovenian or the standard of football in the Belgian Second Division is the key question.

You strongly suspect it is the latter.

Like Kenwyne Jones, his contract expires in the summer, and despite his goal scoring heroics this season, the club will more than likely be relieved to see this saga come to an end.

Four years, no goals.

Expect his career to end that way.

Adedeji Oshilaja :ayatollah:

If Cardiff don't want him, then Gillingham probably will.

He has been a first team regular in his loan stints at the League One club this season, clearly impressing plenty in the South East.

But at 23, the question mark will be over whether he can make the jump to the standard of the likes of Sean Morrison and Bruno Manga.

Slade has given him a few outings on the bench, but he has never looked likely to be thrown in during a league game.

Mind you, there are some Cardiff fans mentioning Justin Edinburgh as the man they'd like to see take over. If so, he might give Oshilaja a proper chance.

Don't bet on that, though.

' Tommy O'Sullivan ' :ayatollah:

Last but by no means least is Tommy O'Sullivan.

Talented, young, and Welsh, there are many who'd like to see him get a proper chance in the first team.

Has let no one down in 21 appearances for Newport County across League Two and the FA Cup.

The Welsh young player of the year for 2015, there will be a real appetite to make sure he doesn't slip through the club's grasp.

' Declan John ' :ayatollah:

Declan John has returned from a very succesful spell at Chesterfield and will be in big demand this summer.

Oshilaja, O'Sullivan, and John are the only definite ones. I would keep hold of Adeyemi and Doyle to get a fee for them. The rest can do one.

Steve, Declan John and Tommy O'Sullivan should be involved in all pre-season friendlies :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Totally agree. You know my thoughts on John in particular. Yes, he's still not the finished product but investing in him this young will reap rewards when he's older. As we've said plenty of times, he didn't look out of place in the Premier League!

If we are looking to reduce the wage bill get rid of the highest earning CB and use Oshilaja

I believe the thinking for next season is along those lines.

Certainly makes sense

One of Manga and Morison and with Turner that's a good amount of the wage bill and someone ready to step in and prove himself.
