A Swansea City fan has landed a £174,000 winning bet – after backing Cardiff to blow their play-off hopes for a pound.

The mystery Swans fan from Neath placed a quid on bitter rivals Cardiff losing their crunch Championship clash at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, a match Russell Slade’s side simply had to win to give them a chance of joining Swansea in the Premier League via the play-offs.

And with Cardiff hammered at Hillsborough, the anonymous punter was quids in with the successful prediction one of an incredible 15 results over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The 35-year-old painter landed leading bookmaker Coral’s unique Football Jackpot by correctly predicting the outcomes of 15 games – including the Bluebirds’ 3-0 defeat – and was the sole winner, meaning he raked in £174,821.90.



Interestingly, he did not back his beloved Swansea to beat Liverpool on Sunday, leaving the Liberty clash out of his selection before Francesco Guidolin’s side secured their top-flight status with a 3-1 win over the Reds.



But having got Leicester’s draw at Manchester United and Southampton’s win over Manchester City spot on, he was left sweating on just one final game on Monday night – the pivotal Premier League game between Chelsea and Tottenham – meaning it wasn’t just Leicester fans celebrating when Eden Hazard scored the leveller at Stamford Bridge.

The Neath man – who regularly stakes £1 for a chance of the jackpot – said: “I still can’t believe I have managed to win the jackpot. Going into the last game, I knew I needed a draw and when Tottenham went 2-0 up, I thought it was all over. Chelsea equalised with seven minutes to go and that was the longest seven minutes of my life.



“I’m a huge Swansea fan but I’ll always be grateful to Eden Hazard who scored the equaliser. I may even get a shirt with his name on framed and put up on my wall.

“It will be nice to treat my family to a holiday with my winnings and then look to put the rest towards paying off my mortgage.”

Coral spokesman, John Hill commented: “It’s never easy predicting 15 correct football results, especially considering the number of draws last weekend. It seems quite fitting that the last result needed for our winning customer was the one which completed the fairytale season for Leicester who wrapped up the Premier League title with the draw at Stamford Bridge”

Not a surprise to see Wathan the Jack revelling in Cardiff's misfortune. How they still have him assigned to covering Cardiff is beyond me but it does sum up the incompetence of the Echo!

This even goes without saying the article is completely misleading as well. It was part of an accumulator. He also didn't bet on Cardiff. He bet against Cardiff.

Anyone predicting 15 results correctly deserves a decent payout even if he is a Jack.
