GIANLUIGI BUFFON
The long-serving Buffon remains Italy captain despite calls for him to be stripped of the position in recent days following his role in Juventus' controversial draw with AC Milan. The game finished 1-1 but Milan might have gone 2-0 ahead had Buffon not clawed a ball that appeared to be over the line back into play. He said he was not certain it had crossed the line and has been backed by Italy coach Cesare Prandelli.The 34-year-old first led Italy at Euro 2008 and took the job permanently last year.
PETER SHILTON
England's most-capped player of all time captained his country on 14 occasions, including during two World Cup campaigns.He was wearing the armband when twice beaten by Diego Maradona in the 1986 quarter-final loss to Argentina and he also had the honour in his 125th, and final, appearance in the 1990 third-place play-off.
DINO ZOFF
The inspirational Zoff crowned a glorious career when he captained Italy to World Cup success in 1982 at the age of 40. He had been leading the side since the 1978 tournament, when Italy finished fourth.He won 112 caps, his international career having also begun triumphantly with European Championship victory in 1968. He also captained Juventus in the 1983 European Cup final but was on the losing side.
LEV YASHIN
Still regarded by many as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Yashin played in three World Cups for the Soviet Union. The Dynamo Moscow legend, who enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades, set the standard for modern keepers with his agility, aggression and innovative approach.He is the only keeper to have been named European Footballer of the Year and the Lev Yashin Award is given to the best goalkeeper at World Cup finals to this day.Yashin always was managing the defensive game of his team, so fierce that even his wife accused him of yelling too much at the pitch; he was ocasionaly captain, to appoint a goalkeeper as a captain is a relatively new custom.
The great athlete, possessing an extraordinary reactions and courage, Yashin is said to have saved more than 150 penalties during his career. With him in between the posts, the USSR National team achieved the best results in their history, winning the Olympic Games in 1958, the European Cup in 1960 and taking the 4th place in the World cup in 1966.
