BURNLEY: A LESSON FOR CARDIFF?

Tuesday 3rd May 2016

Three years ago Cardiff were celebrating promotion at Turf Moor but now Sean Dyche and his men are celebrating another promotion of their own and they’ve done it without breaking the bank.

Cardiff will play their football in the Championship for a third successive season following capitulation at Hillsborough on the weekend but while the Bluebirds ponder their mistakes and mishaps, Burnley celebrate another promotion.

As Burnley did before their promotion in 2014, Cardiff now have to build on the progress they’ve made as a club this season.

It’s easier said than done of course but the capital’s club have made great strides on and off the pitch this season, the big question is whether they can keep building on the wonderful platform they currently boast.

The best clubs, although usually with a wealth of investment, never put a limit on how much they can improve and their attitude reflects that of winners.

Burnley won promotion to the Premier League on Bank Holiday Monday and they are a club who present a sterling example to other Championship clubs how to go about reaching the promise-land.

The Clarets did what few others can achieve in bouncing straight back to the top league following relegation but unlike previous ‘yoyo clubs’, they didn’t have to do it by dropping into an overdraft.

Burnley do possess a striker who cost them somewhere in the region of £12.5 million in the form of Andre Gray who will take the Championship golden boot but the club still made a profit due to the departures of Danny Ings and Jason Shackell among others.

Astonishingly, despite waving goodbye to the Premier League, Burnley made a profit of more than £30 million over the course of the last year and due to the good work of manager Sean Dyche in the transfer market and the prize money involved in winning the Sky Bet Championship, Burnley are likely to make another profit when their accounts are next released.

The good news at Turf Moor doesn’t stop there as a record-breaking television deal coming into place for next season means Burnley’s well-managed finances can only improve as they attempt to survive in the Premier League again.

Cardiff have made cuts of their own in the last 12 months in order to make a profit but it goes to show how many errors they made during and after their Premier League year. The Bluebirds come nowhere near the profits of Burnley and their spending habits during their Championship return even landed them a transfer embargo.

It’s not just Cardiff who can learn lessons from Burnley though, a number of other relegated clubs, such as QPR, will look to Burnley as a shining example of how to handle relegation, how to bounce back and how to keep the books balanced in the process.

The Premiership season was a complete disaster, the only good to come out of it was an unusual 4 years of parachute payments.

Yes Burnley are the model we should follow.

We should also start looking at things with a glass half full perspective. Also as Sven argues we should build on the progress made this season by finish 7th four places above last years 11th rather than forever moaning about theoretical opportunities which were missed.

That doesn't mean I'm happy for the same mistakes to happen again and I do expect the manager to work on his shortcomings but I also appreciate the good work he has done.

The PL season was a disaster from the end of December on. We were on course to stay in in the PL until Malky was sacked.

StT.

Exactly Ole was a disasterous appointment from start to finish..under Malky we had a chance to stay up...the team fell apart and capulated with the piss poor Solkjear in charge..we were pathetic in our last 10 games in the premier league!!

Great post!

Only thing I would say is spend big on a proper striker (not another Cornelius) because gd this season for 7th spot is poor. Not enough goals scored. Same in PL year. I know it's all eggs in one basket but you can't have ambition without intent.

I agree and when we came down we still had the backbone Marshall, kev, connolly, Hudson, turner, gunner, whitts, noone of our championship team. 1/2 quality additions (a striker, centre mid) to that base along with the daelhi Fabio etc could have been enough to Challenge again but Ole spent 1/3 million on too many average players and then blew about 10 million on two centre backs that we never needed. We are still playing price for his two ludicrous transfer Windows now.

We needed a manager who knew the championship! I'm sure we would have gone back up with a couple of decent signings. :old:

It shows that chop and changing is not always the answer which Burnley showed. :thumbright: :ayatollah:

Apart from losing Ings and Trippier, they kept the squad they had in the Prem, then added Joey Barton and a goal scorer in Gray. Plus they kept a great manager in Dyche, while we had Ole.

Agree and great opening post.

Over the past 3-4 years I have been fortunate to photograph many of Burnley games both in the Championship and Premiership and its their model in which I also base my "map to the Premiership"

In an alternative post I suggested that we should get rid of our dead wood and loan players and spend £10m on a PROVEN championship goal scorer. I was criticised for mentioning a certain Fulham striker but if he can get 20 goals for them what can he do when given more opportunity to score. He also knows the area and would settle in easier

Anyway that aside... The Burnley model is one to follow. They have not just got promoted once but twice

We don't need to spend big we just need to spend smart. Lets be clear. Those extra 10-15 goals this season would have earned us enough points for promotion. Losses into draws and draws into wins - it makes such a difference

Totally agree, although we don't necessarily have to follow any other team's example other than our own, in that everything we did in the season following our relegation, we do the opposite! ;)
