Reports in Spain say Bale has opened talks with Spanish giants over bumper new contract, dashing Manchester duo's hopes of luring him back to the Premier League

Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale is set for a new deal in Spain, according to reports

Gareth Bale has opened talks on a new deal with Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Madrid-based sports paper Marca say Bale could even put pen to paper on the contract this week, tying him to the Bernabeu until 2021.

The move comes as a blow to Manchester United and Manchester City, who each hoped to lure Bale back into the Premier League this summer.

United want to renew their interest in Bale, having previously tried to sign him from Real Madrid. Incoming Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has also placed Bale at the top of his wish-list for new players.

However, Bale has previously resisted overtures from the Premier League duo and is set to commit to Real for another five years.

According to the reports, the extension of Bale's contract would give him an extra £50,000 a week. He is already reportedly on £300,000 a week.

Real officials believe the future has to be built around their Welsh star, who has stepped up to the plate further in the injury absence of team talisman Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bale scored his 19th goal of the season in the 1-0 win at Real Sociedad on Saturday, his second successive match-winning display. In the previous La Liga game, Bale grabbed two goals in the 3-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano.

Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos backed Bale to follow that up by downing Manchester City in this week's Champions League semi-final return leg.

Injured duo Ronaldo and Karim Benzema could be missing again and Ramos said: "Bale continues making the difference when we miss Cristiano and Karim.

“He always takes over the responsibility and it is very important for us that he will be very motivated.”

Boss Zinedine Zidane, who has been Bale's staunchest backer during his sometimes troubled three-year spell with Real Madrid, said: "Bale has had problems but he could be like Cristiano and play many games.

"It was great to see a player of his importance score a goal against Real Sociedad ahead of Wednesday. I'm happy for him. He's had a lot of injury problems but I'm very happy to see him play 90 minutes."
