The Bluebirds' boss launches staunch defence of his reign as manager but concedes what he has done 'might not be good enough for some people'
Russell Slade claims he has not been told it's play-offs or bust for his future as Cardiff City boss and launched a staunch defence of his Bluebirds' tenure.
Slade seeks the victory at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday that would keep Cardiff's stated top-six target in sight going into the final weekend.
But whatever the outcome in the Hillsborough crunch, the often-criticised manager has insisted he can look himself in the eye over his time in south Wales.
He did concede, however, that it 'might not be good enough for some people'.
Slade is still unsure of whether he will be offered the chance to stay on at Cardiff City Stadium as he approaches the end of his contract, though he knows his hopes of remaining in the hot-seat would be significantly boosted with a win at Wednesday.
Nothing less than an away victory will do for Cardiff as they seek to overhaul a four-point deficit on Wednesday and try to overtake the Owls in the final game of the campaign against Birmingham a week on Sunday.
The opportunity – one that Slade describes as wonderful and slim – comes just three months after it was strongly suggested the former Leyton Orient boss had just three games to keep his job.
Slade says he tried his best to keep the pressure on his shoulders away from his players, claiming that there is a trust and togetherness on and off the pitch that could yet see Cardiff remain in with a shout of promotion to the Premier League.
But – without stating who he was referring to – he did admit that his best attempts may still not be enough to convince everyone of his efforts or ability.
Asked about his contract, Slade said there had been no further discussions, but denied that he had been told that his future could depend on sealing a play-off place.
“We will have clarity soon on what’s happening, but any success going forward is only going to help, for sure," said Slade.
“To get into the play-offs would be a very decent achievement for the players, the management team, staff everybody associated with the club.
