Russell Slade calm over his Cardiff City future insisting: 'I can look in the mirror and know I've done my best'

The Bluebirds' boss launches staunch defence of his reign as manager but concedes what he has done 'might not be good enough for some people'

Russell Slade claims he has not been told it's play-offs or bust for his future as Cardiff City boss and launched a staunch defence of his Bluebirds' tenure.

Slade seeks the victory at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday that would keep Cardiff's stated top-six target in sight going into the final weekend.

But whatever the outcome in the Hillsborough crunch, the often-criticised manager has insisted he can look himself in the eye over his time in south Wales.

He did concede, however, that it 'might not be good enough for some people'.

Slade is still unsure of whether he will be offered the chance to stay on at Cardiff City Stadium as he approaches the end of his contract, though he knows his hopes of remaining in the hot-seat would be significantly boosted with a win at Wednesday.

Nothing less than an away victory will do for Cardiff as they seek to overhaul a four-point deficit on Wednesday and try to overtake the Owls in the final game of the campaign against Birmingham a week on Sunday.

The opportunity – one that Slade describes as wonderful and slim – comes just three months after it was strongly suggested the former Leyton Orient boss had just three games to keep his job.

Slade says he tried his best to keep the pressure on his shoulders away from his players, claiming that there is a trust and togetherness on and off the pitch that could yet see Cardiff remain in with a shout of promotion to the Premier League.

But – without stating who he was referring to – he did admit that his best attempts may still not be enough to convince everyone of his efforts or ability.

Asked about his contract, Slade said there had been no further discussions, but denied that he had been told that his future could depend on sealing a play-off place.

“We will have clarity soon on what’s happening, but any success going forward is only going to help, for sure," said Slade.

“To get into the play-offs would be a very decent achievement for the players, the management team, staff everybody associated with the club.

Win,lose or draw tomorrow Slade has done a great job stabilizing this club.He may not be everyones choice to take us forward but whoever starts next season as manager will have him to thank for the good order the club finds itself in.

Tan will will decide whether Slade is offered a new contract in the summer. I'm convinced he'll be here next season.
For me, he may have done his best but it has not been good enough on the field by far.

Your probably right on him being here next season.I think this season he's had his hands tied to a certain extent so I will wait before I condemn him out of hand.

I think he has far exceeded expectations and deserves a fair bit of credit for turning our season and a majority of the club's fans around

Having said that non-Top 6 finish will mean Slade has ultimately fallen short of his brief

My personal preference is for a new man in charge next season and it looks likely that a final decision will be made after our fate for next year is known

Common sense to me but (as always) I will be behind the eleven on the field come August and beyond :ayatollah:

He's done well to stabilise the club and he deserves a lot of credit for that

However, his tactics, team selection and substitutions leave me and many other people baffled at times.

He has taken us as far as he can and should we fail to win tomorrow it's probably best if he walks away with his reputation pretty much in tact.

:sleepy2: Slade is the best manager in this division or any other division for that matter. The man has no regrets because every decision he makes is the right one.

The only comparison I can really think that comes close to Slade is prob Jesus Christ

After almost 800 games as manager and NOT ONE promotion under his belt its highly unlikely that Slade is going to change his style/tactics etc.
He is a dinasour of a manager and its no wonder the fans have rarely bought into him.

If hes here next season expect more of the same.....he is operating right at the very top of his level.

Thanks Slade time to move on though.......
