For the role behind Kenneth Zohore, I would throw Sammy Ameobi a bone.
Bear with me on this. Before you think I’ve totally lost the plot, there is a method in my madness.
Ameobi was signed to be the difference maker this season. A high-profile loan signing from Newcastle, he has the ability to be as good as anyone at this level. Unfortunately, his impact has been minimal and the signing has been a disaster. But the talent remains.
Cardiff do not boast the likes of Barry Bannan or Fernando Forestieri, who have inspired Wednesday with their craft and influence. It is the fundamental difference between the two sides and the closest thing Cardiff have to these two is Ameobi.
He was their big summer signing and I feel it’s right that their season should be make or break on the back of it.
Ameobi lacks the discipline or, most problematically, the engine to play on the wing. He also lacks the physicality to lead the line, but if he is going to thrive in any position, it is in a free role behind the main striker.
It’s a position that he has rarely occupied, due to his inconsistency and the fact that Cardiff played with two traditional strikers in the first half of the season.
It was only after their January strikers firesale that necessity saw them trial more of a 4-4-1-1 formation.
Ameobi’s inclusion would be particularly harsh on fellow loanees Lex Immers and Tom Lawrence, who have been more impressive than Ameobi in a shorter space of time, but they are also less likely to create something from nothing.
Ameobi could be a passenger for most of the game, but if he were to produce that one piece of magic that decides the contest, his selection would be justified.
It probably won’t happen and he certainly doesn’t deserve such a show of confidence, but Cardiff surely signed Ameobi to settle contests of this magnitude.
Maybe if they were to give him the chance to finally fulfil his potential in a Cardiff shirt, he would come up with the goods... and everything would be forgiven.
