'VILLA SHOULD CONSIDER MCCARTHY'

26/04/16

Aston Villa should be considering Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy to lead them in Sky Bet Championship, according to Ian Holloway.

McCarthy has a proven track record in the Championship, leading both Sunderland and Wolves to promotion and getting Ipswich into the play-offs last season on one of the smaller budgets in the division.

"Mick McCarthy should be on the shortlist for the next Aston Villa job, without a shadow of a doubt," Holloway told Sky Sports.

"I think Ipswich will do well to hold onto McCarthy this summer. Someone with his credibility and know-how will be hot property."

Aston Villa, who have been an ever-present Premier League club before this season's pending relegation, sacked Remi Garde in March.

Not 100% sure he's the best candidate but they could do worse. He's guided two clubs up from the Championship. I'm a big fan and wished we'd appointed him instead of Russell Slade at the time.

Villa need a manager who can cut their wage bill, get the high earners away, clean out all those players who won't fancy Championship football and rebuild a team spirit. Championship experience also a must.

Russell Slade maybe?
